Computer hangs at 'Applying Computer Settings'

Hi all,

 

I have this rather annoying laptop that won't connect to the domain.

 

Whenever you try to log on as a domain user, it goes through the process as it should, right until the 'Applying Computer Settings...' stage, where is locks and will not go any further.

 

Standard XP Pro installation, trying to connect to a vanilla W2k3 server, wired connection, other computers connected to the same switch are fine, internet is fine if logged on as local admin.

 

I'm tearing my hair out with it now. Even tried a complete wipe and re-install, but exactly the same thing happens.

 

Any ideas?

Where in AD is it located & have you tried a diff machine name?

Have you checked the ip settings in particular DNS?

It could well be there's a corrupted profile on the local machine. If you're using roaming profiles, you can use a tool called Delprof.exe which can delete the locally cached profiles for you:

 

DELPROF /Q /I /P /C:\\WorkstationName

 

If you need a copy of Delprof.exe, please let me know. The above command will prompt each profile before it gets deleted. You should run the command on a working machine connected to the same domain.

The GPOs that are being applied could be conflicting with something on that machine. Your best be to track it down is to turn on userenv logging which will log all of the GP actions. There is a nice bit of free software to do this that you can grab from here:

 

SysPro Software -> Policy Reporter

 

It can even be run on a remote pc.

Can't be the machine name as I've tried changing it, and can't be a corrupt profile on the machine because I clean installed it, and it hung up on the first logon! Thanks for the ideas though.
