I've been asked to look into a DIY photo booth setup.

Has anybody been tasked with this sort of thing before and if so what would you recommend?

Wonder why you've been tasked with this as this is not a usual desktop service request.......More for a photographic student project.....why not suggest?

We were asked to help with a cost cutting photobooth for our Year 11 prom this year and with a cobbled together solution, we had a fairly decent result.

Using the app on an old android tablet and a Nikon SLR camera tethered to it we were able to create some decent shots that could be controlled by the students, the only issue we came across was having no ability to charge the camera, so we had to swap out a battery halfway through the proceedings, but otherwise it all went relatively smoothly and with the minimal amount of effort.

 

We did have to purchase the equipment necessary, although we didn't pay for the premium version of the app, but given that the purchase cost was roughly equivalent to the rental of a photobooth, we deemed it worthwhile as it can easily be reused.

Where did you source the camera stand and tablet stand from?

We used a standard tripod for the camera, the site team built a 'frame' for the participants to stand behind and we attached the tablet just behind the inside of the frame on a small shelf, with time i'd have liked to actually get around to building some kind of holder for the tablet, but we essentially gaffa taped it into place using some cardboard to cover the buttons.

Depending on your budget there is an iPad app called - wifi booth or you could use the camera on the iPad with the 3-10 second timer set.

Use a gorilla tripod type holder to hold the iPad, Use a decorative cloth hanging in the background to frame the backdrop and shine a lamp towards this for lighting.

We set this up for our wedding guests which worked really well and saved us a lot of money.
