Using an ipad to do a stock check on Oliver

I am a Librarian in a private secondary school, who has just been given an ipad to use in school

Has anyone used an ipad as a bar scanner in a stock check and imported the info back into Oliver successfully?

Generally speaking, depends on what iPad…

 

If an early version (iPad 2/3) then the cameras aren't much cop as they're only 8mp so you have to have a steady hand…

If later… like an iPad air(?) or mini, you have a better camera front and back… so may be able to get away with using that and the free app decodely…

 

However, I do speak of experience… I've ended up with a couple of laser scanners doing the accurate scanning running over Bluetooth into the iPad.

 

If you have the means… go to http://www.serialio.com and get a Bluetooth bridge and a handheld scanner (for iPad 2/3), for later you just need their Bluetooth scanfob…

 

I have a Bluetooth bridge and half a dozen intermec sf51 laser scanners (cheap on eBay) for my database work…

An hours charge keeps an sf51 going for 500 scans 30 metres away, working closer you'll get more scans out of it… and as they are very rugged, the sf51 will bounce down a lot of stairs or get run over or abused and continue to work… - whereas an iPad won't…

I was going to suggest that you could get a dedicated scanner from Amazon for under £15 by tomorrow if you can use Prime. Probably a lot easier than an iPad.
