Chromebooks and network proxy issues

Hi I have just stepped into a mess of a school to help out an over whelmed teacher. The site has a load of chromebooks that have not worked in a while. Upon investigation they are all set to use a proxy system that has not been in place for over a year! I can see that the wireless proxy (devices settings/wireless) has been set to the old system. Someone has also set the network (devicesettings/chrome/usersettings) to the new proxy system.

 

So to get things straight I have changed the wireless settings to the new system and cleared the old network(devicesettings/chrome/usersettings). The problem of course is that the chromebooks are not picking up the changes. I assume this is due to trying to use the old settings to access the cloud and failing to pick up the new settings. Is there anyway around this?

 

I also considered just powerwashing all the chromebooks but it does not appear as a option while logged in as either of the Sysadmin accounts I have access to. Have they removed, hidden

or changed powerwash. Am I just missing something?

If the device is managed by your G Suite domain, powerwash is not available, you need to wipe the device as described at:.

If it's managed by gsuite domain then you need to go into the g suite admin section and actually change the proxy settings in there. (Device Management > Device Settings > Networks > Wifi)

 

But like you said you are going to still need to actually connect them to the internet somehow so they can actually download the new settings from google.

 

Three ways you can do it, take them home connect to ADSL, use a 4g hotspot in school off a 4g phone or router (watch your data usage though), or use a USB>Ethernet adaptor and type in the correct proxy on that. This should allow the chromebooks to connect pick up the new settings and they should hey presto onto your wireless network.

Have there been any changes in the last couple of years since the last post here?

 

Recently changed proxy details and really don't fancy individually visiting around 100 Chromebooks spread across 3 schools. Searching just seems to bring up "home" How-Tos.

throw up a provisioning SSID thats open and only allows traffic to the required urls to update the policy?

 

otherwise youve got some walking to do! they wont change without an internet connection

Good idea, but the proxy is at LEA level so no proxy = no connection. Wouldn't I need to join the machines to the new SSID anyway?

they would, but that would be a task easy enough to manage for everyone just that once! ive used my phone to tether in the past where i needed to provision stuff quickly.

 

 

might be possible to set a transparent proxy server up that connects to the upstream proxy just to get you going?

If I've got to touch the machines, I might as well use my phone. Especially as the last time I tried setting up a TP I cut internet access to the school!
