@mavhc

That doesn't look like a vlsc file name. Mine is very similar to Arthur's

It's just the one from microsoft.com, Windows 10 isn't good enough to pay extra for it

at this point who would choose to deploy this version of win10?

Not me, I'm skipping 1809 altogether and will wait and see what 1903 is like.

you have to assume after the cluster f that is 1809 that they will spend more time actually testing 1903 but i wonder how long that sticks

Is this a bug in the version they pulled or the new one they have just released?

Not actually sure, just saw a tweet. I might test this release and see what happens.

The laptop screen brightness bug is apparently fixed in 1903 (19H1), but not any of the older builds (1703-1803) or the re-release of 1809. :(

With only four months or so to go until the next release, it's almost worth skipping 1809.

I was hoping that this would be the one, I really need to get an image ready to roll out over next year. We can't just keep waiting for the next version all the time! Wasting a lot of time on it

My 1809 checksum matches yours, but not my 2019 which is the one I was concerned about.

I'm on 1709 now and skipped 1803. I'm going to at least test 1809 in a VM, but its not looking like the one to deploy either. As above we can't just keep waiting for the next version.

I'm going to put 1809 on a VM l. Update the Admxs. I'd prefer the autumn release as the support time scale is longer. It's not ready yet. After some culmative updates it will hopefully be stable.

I upgraded my laptop yesterday and have not had any brightness issues so far - so all is good on that front! Loving how they've made OneDrive easier for users to add their Desktop, Pictures and Documents but a bit odd that it doesn't give you the option for Downloads and Videos as they've deemed them not important!

OneDrive Auto-Save.png

The fact that it's easy for you to get OneDrive to save space on a PC is going to be a big help for those laptops we have with SSDs in them as they are typically smaller than the standard HDDs we have in our laptops so that's another nice new feature. The replacement for the Snipping Tool is also better in the fact that (and I dont know about you guys) but every time I use the snipping tool it always seems to open up just where I want to start snipping! It's replacement has a smaller footprint that appears at the top-center of the screen so is mostly out of the way from anything I want to snip!

I am experiencing the mapped drives being disconnected issue - hopefully they'll be releasing a Patch to fix that (you can only hope) but I believe there is a script or something to fix that which I shall look in to in a bit - internally we're calling this the 'Gangnang Affect' as it's affecting our P S and Y drives...

We downloaded LTSC 2019 again to try a new image, and it failed sysprep because Bitlocker had enabled itself, is that a new thing? as we've never had bitlocker automatically enable itself before, but we've mainly been used Edu.

I've installed 1809 (17763.134) on my workstation and found an issue with default apps. VLC has taken my default app for .zip files and I'm unable to set it to 7-Zip. If I right click a zip file and try to change the default app, it will allow to find/browse for 7-Zip and select is as the default app, but it won't actually change the association. If I use the default apps settings applet, it won't let me find Win32 apps.

Turns out it's a known bug in this new release of 1809 and a fix is expected late November. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4467708/windows-10-update-kb4467708.

I've also found that when I log on, all my mapped drive appear disconnected. If I click through them, they will let me access and then appear online.

This has been around for a bit with OneDrive, you can use Group Policy to set it up to warn your users it will start protecting their folders. Am going to roll this out to all of teachers (laptops) as lots save stuff on their desktops which isn't backed up.

I just need to adjust my current group policy as if you have an redirections set on the folders you plan to save to OneDrive it just doesn't work.

You can also get Onedrive to auto sign in, auto redirect the folders and move all the current content over, but am going to do it slowly to make sure we don't lose any data.

Ideally they expand it and OneDrive will backup the whole user folder, and maybe settings as well which would be great for when staff get replacement laptops in the future for example.

I think this is the fix https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4471218/mapped-network-drives-don-t-work-in-windows-10-version-1809

As only some of the drives (PSY) were not reconnecting we took a look at the GPO that was pushing them out and these drives were set to 'update' whereas the unaffected drives were set to 'replace' so we changed the disconnected drives from Update to Replace and after a gpupdate /force and a reboot all drives appear to be OK after rebooting a few times as a test.

So with 1809 on my workstation, I'm having issues using Office 365, specifically attempting to activate it. I'm using the exact same version/installation XML configuration file that I was using on 1803. When I launch an office application, it asks me to sign in and when done, it takes me to the usual New Document page. However the application complains about being unlicensed and has some features disabled. If I close the app and open it again, I'm prompted with the same login box to activate the product, despite I've already done it.

You're expecting MS Windows to work with MS Office? Weirdo.

While installing I've had 2 computers BSOD, I assume, come back to them they say "oh noes, we rebooted", but seem fine after that

I know right!

Edit: It appears to be an issue with my 365 account, not 1809.

I've just done a test image of server 2019 and 1809.

First boot, first login of server 2019 was under two minutes, I didn't put a watch on it.

First boot, first login of 1809 was 10:50, again over 10 minutes like 1803.

Does anyone else experience this long first logon?

What's the thing to log the login process so you can see what's taking up time, I remember having some weird letters you could set somewhere that spelt out something, but can't find it

Windows 10 1809 AppX Issues

There seems to be an issue with Windows 10 1809 where Appx Provisioned Packages can't be removed from a mounted image.

The Setup

I start with 4 WIM files renamed with the appropriate UBR for each.

  • 17134.407 - Windows 10 Enterprise x64 1803
  • 17763.1 - Windows 10 Enterprise x64 1809 (October 9, 2018 "First Release")
  • 17763.107 - Windows 10 Enterprise x64 1809 (November 13, 2018 "Second Release")
  • 17763.134 - Windows 10 Enterprise x64 1809 ("Second Release" + SSU KB4465664 + CU KB4467708)

The Script

A simple PowerShell script is used to complete the following

  • Mount the Image
  • Remove the Zune Video package (with logging)
  • Dismount the Image

$SourceDir = 'C:\DEV\Appx'
$Images = @('17134.407','17763.1','17763.107','17763.134')

foreach ($UBR in $Images) {
   New-Item -Path "$SourceDir\$UBR-Mount" -ItemType Directory -Force | Out-Null
   Mount-WindowsImage -Path "$SourceDir\$UBR-Mount" -ImagePath "$SourceDir\$UBR.wim" -Index 1 -Optimize

   Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Path "$SourceDir\$UBR-Mount" | `
   Where-Object {$_.PackageName -like "*ZuneVideo*"} | `
   Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -LogPath "$SourceDir\$UBR.log"

   Dismount-WindowsImage -Path "$SourceDir\$UBR-Mount" -Discard
}

The Errors

All three versions of Windows 10 1809 resulted in the following error message. Windows 10 1803 worked perfectly.

The Conclusion

There are obviously some internal DISM issues with Windows 10 1809. I would be very cautious about any enterprise deployment until this can be addressed.

@Arthur what log is that from, smsts?

I removed the appx package the way I always do during OSD and it seamed to work. I didn't check the log for errors though.

I've found 3 new packages to remove in this release.
