How to stop windows 10 EDU from installing new October update

Hello all. Kinda new here I think this is my 2nd post actually.

 

I just installed new win 10 EDU workstations this year and I have been hearing some grumbling about the new October update. I am feeling a little hesitant to allow this update

and think I should just forgo the initial push.

 

I currently have a mixed environment of win7 pro and win10 EDU Server 2012 R2.

 

My current GP is auto downloading and notify for install. Yeah I really should have SCCM or WSUS but my environment is not yet there. I am still working on it. As you all probably know a 1 man show only goes so far.

 

I would like to hear what you all are doing and some advice on what I need and or should do with my current policy. Wow that picture is super small I hope it is visible after posting...

Your current GP only affects "quality" or "security" updates. The October update is one of Microsoft's semi-annual "feature updates". With the Edu edition, you are able to choose whether to be on the "semi-annual (targeted) channel" (hint: only people who enjoy being hated by their users or are struggling to find things to do should choose this option) or the "semi-annual channel". You set this in Group Policy. Having set the policy, you can then choose how long to defer its installation for up to 365 days. My view is that it should always be set to maximum deferment - if you decide you really want the feature update to install, you can always go in and reduce it to trigger the install.

Note that cb translates to "semi-annual (targeted)"and CBB translates to "semi-annual".

If you're using WSUS you can leave the October update as unapproved, thereby avoiding its installation.
