I currently have some OM1 fibres which I would like to replace with OM3/4 pre-terminated fibre, as I will be running the cables myself.

 

Is there an easy way I can measure the existing fibre runs or am I going to need to walk/measure the cable runs.

Some of the cables don’t have writing on them - which is a shame as some have the test number which I can look up online.

 

I have a fluke AT runner, but on the fibre, it only gives me a connections speed unlike copper where I can get all the info I need.

 

May see if I can ‘test’ a fibre fluke tester for a day and see what that says.

Why are you replacing them? OM1 work just fine with everything...and work well beyond the “minimum” specs for 10G. I’d be making them a good deal longer than any approximate paced distance...

I have 4 fibre runs 8 - 12 core )from core to various end points in school.

 

From those endpoints, fibre has been extended to other areas of the school.

 

If one of those 4 fibre runs fail for any reason, I lose huge areas of school.

 

I was planning to replace them with a fibre run per cabinet and remove the extension upon extension of fibre runs.

 

Hope that all makes sense

Same here. One new run per cab is the ideal scenario that we should be aiming for.

I would recommend/consider at least two routes to each cabinet. Either as part of a virtual stack/ring or at least something that would allow continued operation even if it meant manually changing connections over - if one of the runs gets broken. (Obviously - be wary about loops - unless your switching can allow for this - many can..if configured).

 

I'd also recommend at least switches in each cabinet - with LAGs.

 

By doing the above - any fibre or module can fail ...or any switch....and the only users affects are those connected to that switch. No affect - if a fibre fails.
