Issues with Windows DNS today (PTR records)

Long story short, our dhcp/dns records are out of whack on return.

 

I've observed the following;

 

1) Machine gets ip from dhcp

2) Machine/IP appears in DNS forward lookup zone

3) Does NOT appear in Reverse lookup zone

4) Right click the machines properties in forward lookup zone, and uncheck "update associated pointer (PTR) record"

5) Repeat step 4 but re enable "update associated pointer (PTR) record" and click apply

6) Machine appears in Reverse lookup zone

 

No PTR entry is generated automatically. it appears only after i uncheck the update PTR box and press Apply. I then re check that box andpress Apply. After that the PTR for that entrygets created automatically.

Delete a workstations record then reboot the associated PC and see what happens.

 

I'd advise you use scavenging to delete unused A records as an ongoing thing. Keeps things nice and clean.

Has the DHCP server got the "always dynamically update DNS records" turned on? or are you getting the clients to do it.

Little update on this,

 

I had scavenging configured but not enabled

 

I've also removed the records and its seems to be repopulating ptr records...... slowly

 

i'll post my results tomorrow.

Do yourself a favour too.... make sure all static addresses are set to static

 

... and just delete all other A records - forward and reverse - and let them recreate themselves. This way you 'reset' in order for the scavenging to be effective (eg no old records are left within your scavenging timeframe).

Ok embarrassing question time..... how do i change a A record from Dynamic to static?

UPDATE: After some more research, This seems to be working now.i'll keep my eye on it though.

 

I had to enter missing user details into DHCP-->ipv4 properties-->advanced-->Credentials

 

This user account needs to also be a member of the "DnsUpdateProxy" group......... i found i video on youtube late last night lol.

 

still not sure how to update dynamic ptr records to "static" tho lol

To static... right click/properties/untick 'Delete when record becomes stale'

 

Do this for anything not DHCP e.g. servers etc

 

Records wont be scavenged then

If you haven't already... I would delete ALL your A records except the static ones and allow them the recreate. Ensures you haven't got duplicate records atc until the next scavenge.

Why are some entries not displayed as "static" even though i've unchecked the box you said above?

Right click and reload / refresh. MMC doesn't refresh for some reason.
