O365 Exchange Online - Journaling Email Options?

Hi all,

 

I am in the process of migrating to Office 365 Exchange Online and want to enable the journaling feature as a way to retrieve emails if someone does something shady or needs an email from years ago.

 

I understand you cannot use a journaling mailbox which is part of your 365 organisation. The end goal is to retire our on-site Exchange server so using an on-site mailbox isn't useful.

 

What options are there to achieve this?

1) setup a transport rule that essentially does journaling and hope MS don’t notice. Will likely work especially if you are small but unsupported obviously.

 

2) use legal hold, no emails are deleted but from a user perspective all remains the same. License dependant

 

However, I would not start here...make sure you have a business reasons for it first and considered all aspects. It is not something to do on whim for user convenience.

In the security and compliance center in office 365 you can enable retention settings that will keep a copy of emails, onedrive documents, etc for the amount of time you specify.
