enjay Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 I'm trying to burn an ISO to DVD, but I am getting told the image is too big for the disk. As the ISO is a download from MS of Windows 10 installer, it seems unlikely it is actually too big (and it says it is 4.42GB). I've tried different disks and drives, but same story. Any ideas?!
LeMarchand Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 That sounds tight to me; IIRC the "usable" capacity seems to be around 4.4 GB. Could you use a USB or memory card instead? Or a DL disk if you have to use a disk?
enjay Posted August 7, 2018 Author Posted August 7, 2018 If this were a random ISO, I'd be inclined to agree but the source makes me doubt the file is the fault. Curiously, I've just tried copying it onto a USB with 6+ GB available and also got told the file is too big.
DJ-1701 Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 Silly question... have you tried burning it on another machine? Could be something with the DVD RW drive. Also if you are using cheep Polaroid blank discs, I have found they are problematic.
Arthur Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 it says it is 4.42GB A 4.7GB DVD = 4.38 GiB (Gibibytes) so it could be too big. Do you have any dual layer DVDs or a USB flash drive?
DJ-1701 Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 Ah... wait a moment... that isn't the generic 32-Bit and 64-Bit combined Windows 10 ISO using the Media Creation tool is it? I know the VLSC image for Windows 10 Education 1803 English International 64 Bit does fit on a DVD fine.
enjay Posted August 7, 2018 Author Posted August 7, 2018 Just tried a different computer, and same problem. All the downloads on VLSC are saying the ISO is 4801GB, so I'm guessing I'll have this problem with all of them.
Steve21 Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 If it's a oneoff build etc we found it's easier just to use the old iso's (can't remember which version it was but I know some of the old ones fit on a dvd) then just use windows upgrade for the new version/features. All the latest ones don't fit on DVDs anymore, and also won't fit on FAT32 for bootable due to the 4GB limit etc Steve
LeMarchand Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 All the latest ones don't fit on DVDs anymore, and also won't fit on FAT32 for bootable due to the 4GB limit etc I used RUFUS a couple of weeks back with a W10 Home image (5.59GB) without problems. (One of the cleaning staff's personal laptop).
Steve21 Posted August 7, 2018 Posted August 7, 2018 (edited) I used RUFUS a couple of weeks back with a W10 Home image (5.59GB) without problems. (One of the cleaning staff's personal laptop). Assuming that wasn't a bootable one then and just manually loaded? You can copy the WIM on and manually load the setup into memory etc, but unless they've changed something you shouldn't be able to load it bootable in FAT32 due to the limits? (Edit - Seems there is a new feature it can do NTFS via UEFI only using UEFI:NTFS, but that's dependant on your system and whether you need to start disabling secure boot etc to get it to work, but for all systems it won't work it seems) Steve Edited August 7, 2018 by Steve21

I tried that with 1703 as that is smaller, but same problem. 1607 is now burning to disc, however.

Machine was 3 years or so old, so I'm assuming that many modern machines will be fine. A longer term option might be investing in something like: https://www.amazon.co.uk/External-Enclosure-included-Virtual-ZM-VE300/dp/B00TDJ4BJU I've got an older (Zalman branded) version of this and it's great, but I had problems using it with this machine - hence the Rufus. Unfortunately prices seem to be skyrocketing.

If you export just the image of the edition you need from the main install.wim (such as Education) you will be able to create a new ISO that will burn successfully because the new .wim is a lot smaller. With Windows 10 v1803 Education, the install.wim goes from 4.02 GB to 3.69 GB if you do this. A saving of 330 MB!
enjay Posted August 7, 2018 Author Posted August 7, 2018 Thanks @Arthur . I'm only wanting this on two laptops, so I think @Steve21 's suggestion of installing an old version and letting Windows Update run is easier! If only MS weren't lazy with the setups, and made one for each WIM - since you have to select your exact version in VLSC, it is annoying it then ignores that selection.
