Can't see server

I have a problem with one of my servers. For some reason it can't be seen by the rest of the network. You cannot ping it although 'it' can ping any other computer. It can also see all other computers on the network. This was working fine on Friday. It has dual NIC's and I have tried via both of them. I rejoined the network letting DHCP assign an IP and it could be seen then. But as soon a you put the dedicated IP back it lets you rejoin the network but you can't see it again.

 

Does this make any sense to anyone? If so can you help me please.

made sure the subnet mask is correct? dont know why it might have changed but you never know!

When you put the manual IP settings back on, have you remembered to add the DNS servers? If so, is your server appearing correctly in DNS snapin?

Until I read the part about DHCP working I'd have said ICMP Filtering / Firewall.

have you got the firewall on?

Are you trying to ping it by name, if so it may not be registering in DNS properly, also is there any other hardware in the way like a router etc that could be getting involved.

 

The other possibility it a duplicate IP address on the network which fits the symptoms perfectly come to think of it.

Assign it a DHCP address then take note of what DNS server(s), gateway and mask it uses and double check your manual settings. While its off its manual IP check to see if anything is conflicting. Does the DHCP assign it an IP in the expected range?

Tried to check Firewall but got the following message so I am assuming that it is off.

"Windows Firewall cannot run because another program or service is running that might use the network address tranlation component (Ipnat.sys)"

 

Ping by IP address.

No duplicate IP.

I had this problem a few weeks when a windows patch got applied and for some reason the firewall came up. I had to disable it and for some reason it stopped off.

 

The last idea I had was to create a reservation for the server in dhcp for each of the nic cards and set the server to pick up the settings from dhcp.

 

Just an idea.

And did it ping properly when you used its IP?

Is there a 3rd party Firewall running?

 

For a temporary fix try - NET STOP IPNAT.SYS

What programs have you recently installed or removed? if any?

Tried same IP on both NICs but only actually using one anyway.

Routing and remote access is running. Appears to be starting automatically.

No third party firewall, no new software added or removed.

Haven't tried the Net Stop yet.

If the routing and remote access is on and configured but not being used it could be causing the issue. With the same ip/subnet on each port it would get mightly confused. Also if you are going to be using both NICs I would suggest using a teaming program like hp network configuration if its an Hp or the intel one if it has intel cards.

Synack you're a genius. I stopped Routing and remote access and I could ping it straight away.
