[ipad] How to set up the Head’s iPad?

I got a question what the best way of setting up the Head's iPad give him a new apple log in for School? Or is it possible to buy apps with his personnel log in and then backup the unit with a managed ID?

How much control do you want to give him?

 

We generally set up staff iPads without an Apple ID and control everything through our MDM. If they want an application we tell staff to e-mail it to us so we can make it available through the Company Portal (since we use Intune) or push it via Meraki (when we used to use it). This also means the school can buy the app with our budget and make it available for others or get the license back when that user leaves.

 

Alternatively set up Apple IDs through Apple School Manager so you keep control from an IT perspective and the user can still get their own apps.

We provide managed ids for iCloud and get staff to use a personal Id for iTunes as the managed ones aren’t able to purchase anything(including free apps).

 

We just tell staff they can pay for their own apps or have us pay for it and assign via vpp, we make it clear that apps purchased on personal ids can’t be claimed for.

@Blue_Cookeh @Jamman960 - can you guys just clarify - as you seem to have contradicted each other - I thought that the apple id's via school manager couldn't be used to buy stuff? That's what Jamman960's said, but seems to be the opposite of your comment blue_cookeh?

If you try to login to the App Store with a managed ID you’ll be told that it can’t be used in the store and get directed towards the volume purchase programme site.

@Blue_Cookeh how are you backing the iPads up if they aren’t logged in?

That what I think I need to do as I don't what to be installing every single app for the head during the holidays also I want a life the rest of the year.

Sorry - we use ASM for any kids with 121 and then "manage" staff accounts ourselves by making them use their school address and redirecting all incoming Apple e-mails to ICT@.

 

@Jamman960 we don't back any iPads up and we don't guarantee the data on them. We don't want them backing themselves up to iCloud/Apple's servers (we actively disable that functionality through MDM). Any work staff do should be stored locally on the iPad and then sync'd back up to the cloud via Office365 (Sharepoint or OneDrive). This means the user can access their work on their laptops too because we redirect documents to OneDrive on staff laptops.

Incorrect, a Managed Apple ID can not buy content from the App Store, the user would need a Personal Apple ID to buy their own content.

 

You can still push content and remove content from a device with a Personal Apple ID using Intune or any other MDM that supports Managed distribution.
