ultima170387 Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 I am currently in the process of setting up our new Hyper-V hosts along with storage spaces direct and just wondered what other peoples thoughts are in regard to network setup. Each server has 2 1Gbps and 2 10Gbps NICS. Thanks
Davit2005 Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 What switches are you connecting the hosts to? INMO you would connect each host with a 10Gb connection to either a chassis switch (2 different modules) with dual management or a stack and employ LACP between hosts and switches.
ultima170387 Posted July 31, 2018 Author Posted July 31, 2018 We only have one Netgear M4300 series 10Gbps switch which all the cabs and servers connect to.
PotNoodleTech Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 Each host here has 2 x 10Gb links trunked via LACP. The "20gig" link has all VLANS on it so all traffic flows through that. Set it up a few years ago now and it's worked perfectly. I only have one core switch so you could do it differently/better of you have multiple cores.
azureusnation Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 You might want to use one of the 1Gb nics in each host for cluster heart beat.
Davit2005 Posted July 31, 2018 Posted July 31, 2018 We only have one Netgear M4300 series 10Gbps switch which all the cabs and servers connect to. The M4300 can be properly stacked I think, and then you could have an LACP link split between both if you want to carry on with Netgear. The 10Gb cards I normally use in my home vsphere lab are the Intel X520-DA2, I've normally picked up on ebay for around £80. I've got these split between 2 X Ubiquitti ES-16-XGs one is providing intervlan routing although I'm going to move this routing to 2 vyos instances, one on each host when I get a free weekend
