Display port - HDMI adapters

Does anyone know if display port HDMI adapters carry audio or is it as the port suggest just video?

 

Have a number of Dell optiplex 780 computers and we will be fitting some new 65” display screens and would like to use a single HMDI cable for both audio/video if possible.

Whilst DisplayPort can carry audio, I've not known any HP or Dell PCs that use the feature.

 

I've also not come across an adapter that does it with a single cable. Most will take the video from the DisplayPort cable and audio from the rear jack, combining the two into the HDMI output.

They can, but it depends on the machine.

Strange, our Dell OptiPlex 790's we got from you the other year send audio via the display port, and they are only 3rd gen. Same with the HP 8200's we have.

 

We're using bog standard DisplayPort to HDMI to connect the base unit to ActivPanels.

Yes, I'm using 2nd gen laptops and PCs and they can. You'll need the intel audio driver (make sure you use the intel display drivers not the auto windows drivers) Did you get an active or passive adaptor?, I use active to cover my bases and the price is similar but my Epson projectors won't do the sound with the "cablematters" adaptors (but they work fine elsewhere) but the "rankie " adaptors work fine. if you look at the display port output the symbol will have the letters "dp" on it if it also has a ++ so "dp++" then it can use a passive adaptor. This works with hp8200, hp8300, elitebook 8460p 8470p and ProBook g1 640. And works with all our projectors and TVs (so far)

 

 

I MUST reiterate that you need to install the intel package drivers from Intel this will install the intel display audio otherwise windows will install it as a HI definition audio device and it wont work. In device manager you'll want to see the "inter® display audio"
