Adobe!!

Anyody got a good solution for installing adobe flashplayer or shockwave or even acrobat reader over a network. Seems to me that every few weeks we get a new version of these programs that pretty much everyone has to install but which are not prepared for network installs.

 

How does everyone else manage?

We have the MSI installers for them, then use GPO to deploy them. When you go to download the product click "distribute"

Except we can't update our version due to a certain large exam board sending out documents as part on timed work that will *nit* open in newer version of Adobe Reader. This also applies to a godly amount ot their specifications too.

 

And they will not change to newer versions as they are not happy about the security of Adobe Reader.

 

My first is in Exam but not in cock-up ... can you guess the rest?

Hmm I've not come across that yet, which board is it Tony? Then again I don't use A.R I use Foxit and its been fine

'Tis Edexcel ... they keep sending stuff out that will work in 8.0 and below .. but 8.1 upwards ... file type errors or run time errors, especially if you try and load it as a browser plug-in. Since we use this as part of timed conditions work on computers for one of our English courses we have had to bite the bullet.

 

Apparently there is a tweak for it ... but Edexcel do not know what it is ... so hopefully we will discover it when rebuild our images prior to the usual summer reload.

Back around version 7 of reader there was an adobe supported way to customise the msi so that it did not ask for updates. I just set that up and have left it since as all reader does is get bigger and slower with no noticible improvment.

I had previously tried to get adobe players in a redistributable form, but at that time the links just gave up. I'll try again now. - The number of times I've had to build my own msi to get the things installed!

I have used foxit for probably around 2-3 years now and very impressed with it, all I do is extract to a shared folder on the network and put shortcuts into startmenus for it then its just the server to update Very nice product and much quicker than Adobe and haven't had any real issues for months with it.
