How to install an OS from a .dmg without burning it?

I have a .dmg image of OSX Server I want to install, but I dont have a dual layer DVD-R to burn it to

Theres a few suggestions here

which seem to say that if you put the .dmg on another partition or extract it there, you can boot from that partition as if its a CD

 

How do I do that?

Ive tried just copying the image to the partition, and also mounting it in OSX and then copying it to the partition, but when I boot and hold the option key, the only partition it lets me boot from is the one with OSX on it, not the one with the .dmg

 

Is this possible? What am I doing wrong?

Doubt that this will help but if you already have a mac server floating around you should be able to make it boot the image over the network:

There may be a way to do this from another mac as well but I don't know.

I suspect it is possible but I don't know how to do it so not going to attempt advice google might tell you.... Might be easier just to buy a blank dvd?

Edit: Had a better look at this, it is very involved, I'd buy the DVD-DL as opposed to this option.

You need to use disk utility to burn the dmg as a partition to an external drive (eg ipod), copying/mounting the file will not work. I have done this for leopard but it should be the same for Server. Its pretty easy, think of it like burning an iso to a DVD

If you have a DMG image of OS X Server then you can *restore* this image using Disk Utility to a partition on an external drive that is set as a GUID Partition (in other words an Intel Mac can boot from it). There is a good process for doing this in easy steps here:

Sorted now, installing as we speak

restored it to a partition on a firewire disk
