My laptop says no bootable device. I have tried the recovery CD and it comes up with the blue screen. Which one has died, the hardware or the mother board?

 

What can I do to get this laptop up and running again.

So you can boot off the CD, but trying to access the harddrives causes problems? Check the harddrive - get it out of the machine and put it in a USB case (or one of those converter cables you can get from Maplin) and try and read it from another machine, see if that works.
