azureusnation Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 Afternoon. What a lovely bank holiday it has been. So... single queue trust wide... I bet you'll think im crazy and mad but this come in with my trust wide RDS solution. One print queue for everyone and then they use follow me printing. However management as they are always get in the way of great money saving exercises and want some standard colour printers to stay and will not budge on the idea of just have strategically places MFDs. Why do I bother! Any way, I know the cPad used to be a solution to make non embeded devices in to papercut devices, but, the big question is, what is the 2018 version of the cPad and can it convert standard printers with biometric scanners in to a followme print. The amount of time saving this would have on me and my team with only having one single print queue for our RDS cluster. It would be heaven. Please let me know if there is a solution to this!
MatthewL Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 How good is your network for a starter? What you could do is still have a single setup of PaperCut but use site servers for each school keeping all data locally and the jobs can still be configured in the same way.
localzuk Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 You can set up release stations using standard PCs - so you could mount a cheap Windows tablet next to the printer, and use that? You'd need licenses for the release stations though. We're planning on having a single follow me queue too, but I've not sat down and designed it just yet
Steve21 Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 Guess it also depends on why they want the lil printers to stay, if it's office ones etc I wouldn't even bother putting them into the follow me and just have them applied to whatever rooms/offices it is as a separate non-default'd queue. Else like local said, you'd want to go down the release station route, or get proper lil colour ones that can have embedded software Steve
localzuk Posted May 29, 2018 Posted May 29, 2018 Bare in mind, follow-me queues generally are all the same printer driver. You'll have issues if you're trying to use printers with different drivers. We're fully Ricoh here (well, except for the few small machines but we don't worry about them).

Does anyone know if biometrics would work on a raspberry pi? AButters can you let me know how it goes and if the card readers and that work on there as well? Looks like you can buy some "cheap" £60 7" touch screens for the Pi as well... looks like a great option. As well as there being the option for a Pi powered over PoE. If the trust won't stretch to a couple of very efficient MFD's and want to go back to spending a fortune on toner then it might be worth looking at some A4 devices that can take embedded software. Some A4 devices have very nice, large touch screens so you don't need an external box etc for login and release. What will you do for copy and scans?

Anyway many MFD including brand new ones have a 10/100 NIC installed so they wouldn't benefit from a local server a anyway.
MatthewL Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 Most have GB capable NIC's on them now. I only use site servers with PaperCut if connection between sites is poor or lots of traffic from that site for printing. PaperCut is good with site servers you get 1 free with each license I believe.
