I wasn't particularly pleased with the quality of the bundled NVR setups.

I ended up buying a few different onvif compatible cameras and playing with my own software setup.

I started with Zoneminder (open source), and then after a problem with one of the cameras I'm now using Contacam (free, runs on windows) on a VM and it works really well.

I use a few of these for outdoors - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B073GQ8T2L/ and they work well in the dark which was important for me.

Indoors (dog kennel) I use a pair of these - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B018UN6K02/ mounted upside down. (quality now as good of course a 720p but they are fine for what I needed in their location)

Hiwatch by Hikvision.

4 Ch NVR with built in PoE switch.

Excellent free software for PC/Android/IOS use any HDD you might have handy.

Just CAT5 the cameras to the NVR and connect the LAN port to your power line adapter and your done.

This is the simplest system I’ve ever worked with, just love them.

If you've got a custom or cheap set up and the bandwidth it's worth uploading your video feeds to the cloud. The useful data could get destroyed in a fire or something. It's not just for criminal deterrence!

Thanks guys

Gone with the Hview and it seems ok.

Haven’t had cctv before so nothing to compare it with.

One problem though... when it’s plugged in to the network it seems to kick everything else off (wi-Fi as well) can only get back on by giving devices a static ip) seems to kill the routers dhcp for some reason...

Waiting for an email back from support and can’t find anything on google. Only one reference to this in a review of the product but no answer other than make sure the DVR isn’t using the same IP as the router (which it isn’t).

Does the NVR dish out it's own IPs or pick them up from your router?

I think initially it had it's own IP (and one for each camera), can't honestly say if the camera IP's were static but for the box the DHCP selection was not ticked so I guess it had its own).

But it wasn't the IP of the router...?

I have tried ticking the DHCP box, but it didn't seem to make a difference... I have given almost everything around my house a static IP now (including the cctv box and all the cameras)... getting stuck on Alexa and the wi-fi dongle for the TV though!

But I'd really like to know what the problem is...

What're your thoughts?

I was wondering if the cameras connected directly to the NVR, and you might be able to configure septate IP ranges.

OK, a little update and a cry for help!

NVR is an HVIEW - https://www.amazon.co.uk/H-View-Security-Megapixels-Surveillance-installed/dp/B01KNERMNU/ref=cm_cr_othr_d_product_top?ie=UTF8

ROUTER is a VIRGIN Super Hub 2ac - https://www.virginmediabusiness.co.uk/help-and-advice/products-and-services/super-hub-2ac-guide/

HView support have been ok, kindly emailing me every day asking me things like... Have I plugged it into the correct ports? Is the NVR conflicting with the IP on my router?

So, I have got no further really.

What I can't understand is what the actual problem is! On the NVR I have tried DHCP and STATIC... on the router I have tried DHCP reservation and also excluding the static range from DHCP...

It doesn't seem to matter what I try, as soon as I plug that NVR into my router it seems to kick every other (DHCP) device off. All STATIC devices remain connected which has been my only saving grace, so far.

Networking isn't really my forte, but it can't be that complicated can it?! Am I missing something really, really simple? It does sound like some sort of conflict, but I have double checked the IP's.

EG: ROUTER - 192.168.0.1

NVR - 192.168.0.10

CAM 1 - 192.168.0.11

CAM 2 - 192.168.0.12

CAM 3 - 192.168.0.13

CAM 4 - 192.168.0.14

I have Googled endlessly, unfortunately the search terms bring up so many hits about CCTV and networking and cameras that it's too much to trawl through.

The closest I have got to an answer is a review on Amazon, with a very similar problem (and no solution)...

I would have taken it back already, but when I tested it everything seemed fine. It wasn't until I had spent over two days up ladders and in my loft and drilling holes through walls that I suddenly realised my computer had no network connectivity!!!

My immediate thought would be that the NVR and your Router are both operating as DHCP servers.

Yes, this seems feasible.

I hadn't really looked in to that option, but on further investigation it appears correct as when choosing the DHCP option on the NVR, it blatantly gives out IP's that are already assigned to other devices on my network... However, turning off the DHCP option on the NVR and setting the NVR and cameras to static IP's does not resolve the problem.

I have seen a post somewhere (I forget after so much Googling), that says if the NVR doesn't recieve a quick enough response from the DHCP on the router, it will use it's own DHCP and you cannot turn it off and have now found other posts with similar issues (not specifically Hview units, but in general it seems this is how NVR's work). It could be that as I'm using Homeplugs to get the network from the loft to the router downstairs that there is some delay...

Is the NVR and router defo on different IP’s ? Can you ping the nvr if plugged in direct / through another switch (with router not connected) ?

Can you do it the other way around.. turn off dhcp on the router?

Can you set static IPs on the camers?

So, this is exactly what I have ended up doing. DHCP is off on the router and everything in the house has a static IP, obviously this is just a pain if any guest wants to use the WiFi or everytime I get a new device.

That's what I'd do if possible.. Take 8 or so addresses out of the Router's DHCP pool and just statically assign the cameras and NVR.

Great minds huh?

I tried this also... On the router I tried setting the DHCP pool at for example 192.168.0.17 - 192.168.0.250

Obviously the router is at 192.168.0.1

Then I have left all my other devices with static a I.P.

PC 1 - 192.168.0.2

PC 2 - 192.168.0.3

Laptop - 192.168.0.4

Phone - 192.168.0.5.... etc.

NVR and cameras static as per previous post

NVR - 192.168.0.10

CAM 1 - 192.168.0.11

CAM 2 - 192.168.0.12.... etc.

The router still wouldn't give out any addresses from the rest of the pool (17 - 254).

I have also tried leaving DHCP on and giving the NVR and cameras DHCP reservations by mac address. It doesn't seem to matter what I do, as soon as I plug in the NVR the router just seems to give up serving addresses (and yes, that really does seem to suggest a DHCP conflict somewhere).

Also my hub appears to be a bit buggy as I do not see these individual checkboxes to delete the reservations!

superhub2.jpg

But this is of course convoluted as are most things with the superhub....

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Networking-and-WiFi/Help-with-address-reservations-on-a-Superhub-2ac/m-p/3529979#M157349

It must be something simple or I'm sure Google would be lit up with results as these units are so popular... What am I missing?

I guess having tried so much last week I am just confusing myself now, when I work it out I'm sure it will be a big facepalm moment!
