I recently discovered that you can cram normal laptop drives into the SAS slots on my ml350 G6 server. So today I jammed 5 low spec kingfast ssds in to it and setup a raid 0 1300MB read speed means I blow away the sata speed hump!

 

I may use this as a basis for a 2nd backup on the system.

Yup. The controller is SAS/SATA generally.

The controller has influence too of course, but yes the connections are all SATA/SAS.

I was just amazed that the server didn't flag up a message about unsupported media and refuse to boot.

Any problems with this so far? Did you try using caddies? Is the RAID controller complaining? Are the temps read correctly?

yeap, don't do this the server will eventually complain that the drives are overheating and cripple the speed.

Did you try in caddies? I think my Gen8 has 3 sata ports on the MB, might use those instead

You can ram pretty much anything into any server if you use a hammer.

Either software RAID 1 them (apparently that works in Hyper V Server) on the SATA ports of my ML350p Gen8 servers, or see if they work via the RAID card.

in the pic I used some kingdian 120GB SSDs as a test and it seemed to go well. I then purchased 6 2tb SSHDs and they worked well for a couple of hours but then became super slow. The server ilo stated that the drives were overheating. (they were not) it crippled the drives speed, and ramped up the servers fans to 100%. This is a known characteristic, (not a fault) you must buy certified drives

 

I've bought a 5.25" caddie and will use the internal sata ports and software drive pools in server 2016.

My experience on the cheap brand SSDs are you actually don't know what you are getting. Different batches will have different controllers, different chips, and quite a few of them are what is known as sweepings - so ones that might not have passed quality assurance for the big names. If you are using it for something where it doesn't matter too much if it fails prematurely - then fine, but for anything else, I will tend to stick to the establishment where we know what we are getting. Especially with it being so easy to forge storage capacities. A 1tb MicroSD card for £20 anyone?

In all seriousness, my experience of hard drives not working properly on HP or Dell systems, is usually down to a few lines of code that basically verifies that it is the overpriced, I mean verified, drive...
