The other week we got the site licence for Smart Notebook 17. All our laptops currently have 15, so I thought I would download the new software and just install over the top of the old version. Installation did not show any errors, but the old Notebook 15 icon was still on the desktop and still worked when double clicked on. I then did a search for the new version but could not find it, although smart drivers and a few other extras had updated.

I then tried to uninstall the old version, and after a long wait it failed. I tried all sorts of options to remove it, but nothing worked, and now version 15 does not work either, so I am going to re image the laptop.

My question is, should I be uninstalling the older version first, or should the smart software update as part of the new version install?

Err I don't know specifically about 15, as we did the upgrade from 11, but I'm sure there was an option to uninstall (if required) as part of the install manager. Just ticked that and let it do it's thing :p

I've found smart stubborn in the past - the in place upgrade took over an hour to run. I now use Revo uninstaller when I want to upgrade smart and then reinstall from scratch. It still takes nearly as long as re-imaging if smart is part of your build...
