I noticed about 4 years ago that 14" laptops were becoming far more popular. This translates to having far more available in the refurb market. I've been using EliteBook 8460p and now the 640g1 as they are a bargain piece of kit.

 

I'm worried that after the 640g1's I'll have to pick laptops that do not support the old HP dock format and have no ODD...

14" is the standard for a business laptop from the likes of HP and docks are now moving away from the traditional port replicator connector unfortunately.

You'll have to shop around for an ODD, our 5th Gen i5 Dell E5450' still have an optical, as do our 15.6" 6th Gen i3 Probook 450 G3's (just ask @robk how nice these are).

Yes very good offerings on encore website however I believe education warranty is better through stone directly for schools
