The 18th....? It's on the 27th...and it's likely to be a new cheaper (we hope) iPad and Classkit Framework so developers can create interaction with Apple Classroom for assessment and assignments
Carter Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 Expect changes aimed more at education and enterprise. Easier management of devices and software.
Jamman960 Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 Should be interesting, Apple insider suggests there may be new entry level iPads with pencil compatibility. Hopefully they can keep the pricing at or below the current level and not pull any of their capacity stunts like they did with the air 2’s
Arthur Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 The 18th....? I think @DalekSec meant 2018 (since the year comes after the month in the UK). Expect changes aimed more at education and enterprise. Easier management of devices and software. What would also be nice is unlimited iCloud storage for education (among other things). 1
free780 Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Expect changes aimed more at education and enterprise. Easier management of devices and software.Could be interesting without Profile Manager. Or maybe a new cloud MDM.
psydii Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 (edited) It's worth noting that Arthur linked to a tweet form the Head of the first iPad 1:1 programme and 7 year Apple/iOS evangelist. He has quite a lot to say about the Apple's current education offer and how much of a difference new iPad will make: https://twitter.com/fraserspeirs/status/977187352601923584 https://twitter.com/fraserspeirs/status/977301922049818624 https://twitter.com/fraserspeirs/status/977542892884496385 https://twitter.com/fraserspeirs/status/977466443045498880 Apple do not love their applications or much of its hardware line up. If it isn't core iOS (i.e. central to the consumer experience on iPhone) you shouldn't bet your strategy on it improving. Ever. See also the abandonment of Workgroup Manager, the failure to develop iTunes U and the general mistreatment of Pro hardware users since 2012. Apparently I'm in charge of one of the largest iOS fleets in education that isn't in an Apple managed relationship. They have tried to woo us to continue to invest, but the problems Frasier highlights (particularly a lack of a public roadmap and proven delivery against promises) left me lukewarm at best. Even if they promise to rectify the lack of communication and continuous improvement problems, it is going to take several years of delivery before I'd consider Apple products in any core capacity to our strategy. Final point: the 2017 iPad is a fantastic and cost effective machine, and when used as a shared resource for quick access to internet resources, managed as though it is 2011 work really really well. Ours are in almost continuous use, and are much more easier to deploy lesson by lesson than chromebooks for our use case. Chromebooks meet a different need. It helps iPad that written course work is not the universal requirement it once was. (Typed on an MacBook pro tethered to an iPhone8, I'm quite the dedicated Apple user) Edited March 25, 2018 by psydii

atcoates Posted March 26, 2018 Posted March 26, 2018 Was looking at getting an iPad for home use, so fingers crossed! I'd guess they may only be available to education establishments. This would keep their consumer range at the higher price.

psydii Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 (edited) Hmm. They may have got the right hardware, but it needs the support of the software eco-system. Without the ability to use O365 or Google for AAA and seamless integration with both of those platforms they don't have a compelling case. Office 365 might be the saviour of the platform, since Google clearly are not going out of their way to give a good experience on iOS. iTunes U seems to be abandoned (some time ago) when it should have been continuously improved. Instead we have new things. Apple will be stuck between a rock and a hard place now - v1 will suck, but changing it mid-year will suck more. They need some sort mechanism for phased deployments of enhanced versions (like Office 365 does). 200Gb should be enough storage per user for now. We offer "unlimited" space for students and even those in photography and media (with big digital cameras) have never accrued more than 70GB. (*except long ago when someone sync'd their 160GB iPod). But that said, file management on iOS is not as easy as in Finder or Explorer so it might be easier to fill it with burst mode photos etc. Interesting though that they are bringing the Classroom App to the Mac. Tacit acknowledgement that the form factor remains useful. Perhaps there will be an education focused model come the re-working that is likely happening after the current keyboard fiasco - or maybe the 2012 macbook pro will live on becoming a school-priced device and remain with us for another five years. Unless you are tied to iOS (see sunk cost fallacy) or Windows (typically through course dependencies on the Adobe Suite and Capita SIMS) the Google / Chromebook platform is probably the best choice for schools that have reliable internet. Jamman960 Posted March 27, 2018 Posted March 27, 2018 Glad they’ve finally sorted the storage, Our eyfs staff and a few students tend to fill the 5gb with photos leaving no space for backups... not being able to purchase additional storage made using managed ids far more trouble than necessary
