SNMP over Internet

If I have a device I want to monitor using SNMP but is on a remote internet connection i.e. sat in a portacabin in the middle of no where with just a router and device would port forwarding SNMP to said device be a no no?

 

I know I could create a rule to only allow from my IP addresses but think I'm going to be stuck with what I have. I can set SNMP to be read only and have a target trap address which if I have read right I would set as our IP address of the monitoring server.

 

Thoughts please.

Use a VPN.

We monitor our remove servers this way.

I know a VPN could be used and that would the the ideal solution but I am limited as to what I have and that is just a broadband router with connectivity. It's just your basic router the ISP provides.

If the router and the end device isn't capable of VPN, could you put in a raspberry pi to do the VPN.

Otherwise you'd need SNMPv3 at a minimum
