Link: Volkswagen confirms Beetle won't be replaced [Autocar.CO.UK]

 

The Volkswagen Beetle will not be replaced and will go out of production after its current generation, the firm's R&D boss Frank Welsch has confirmed.

 

The future of the retro-styled Beetle has been in doubt for some time. Speaking at the Geneva motor show, Welsch said that the production version of the VW ID Buzz electric concept – which takes cues from the Type 2 Transporter – would take the place of the Beetle as a retro-inspired model in the VW range...

 

Mrs. P. won't be happy. She is a Beetle fan and drove a 1972 1302s for many years (Original orange colour)

Unlike the Mini, being a brilliantly engineered continuation of the original, the new Beetle has always been a bit of a pastiche, based on the Golf etc platform it wasn't anything more than a body style. I don't think it'll be much missed.

Never driven one, never been in one - It was the vase and the plastic flower on the dashboard that first inspired my loathing...
