andrewlloyd99 Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 Hi - A school currently has 4 Meraki wifi access points and also uses Meraki for its MDM to manage about 10 devices. The licences are due to expire on the Meraki APs in a couple of months, so will stop working. That's fine as the school is moving over to Unifi Pro access points. Can anyone confirm whether the (free) Meraki MDM will continue to work - or will they need a new one? Thanks
Bev Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 I've never had any sort of Meraki license, and use the free version to manage about 50 devices with no issues, so I think you will be ok. If not, I use Mosyle free MDM at the other school where I work and that works fine as well. For 10 devices it shouldn't be too hard to move to a new MDM if necessary. 1
SHimmer45 Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 it will be fine you just get a message at the top of the screen saying there is a license problem, which if you look at the console its just notifying you that its the legacy license in use. 1
Rob_D Posted March 5, 2018 Posted March 5, 2018 We were using the supposedly free MDM licence, but also had a trial WiFi unit connected (one of the ones you get for attending a webinar). When the licence for the Wifi unit expired, we got locked out System Manager and the MDM console as our licence had expired, despite the licencing menu still showing our free System Manager licence. We were never able to get this resolved, but we push very hard as we were already planning to move to a new system.
andrewlloyd99 Posted March 5, 2018 Author Posted March 5, 2018 Oh - I might have to wait and see then....
andrewlloyd99 Posted March 7, 2018 Author Posted March 7, 2018 Finally had a reply from Cisco Meraki - thought I would share: Thank you for contacting Cisco Meraki Support. They way the Meraki dashboard is set up is that the MDM functions will cease functions also when the grace period has expired. What we can do is once the licensing does expire in 74 days, we can remove the AP licenses and it will allow the use of the MDM functions. We need to wait until the keys have expired and the devices are removed from the dashboard before removing the key. When the keys do expire, please contact us again and reference this case and we can remove the keys. Once the keys expire there is a 30 day grace period, so the MDM functions will not be affected. So, in short - yes the MDM will still work, but there are some changes to be made to the dashboard first. 1
