I can't think of a reason an HP Microserver (about £120-150 with cashback or on ebay) + Freenas wouldn't work best! Bung in any number of hard drives you like (up to 4) and pop in your flash drive (there's even an internal USB port behind the door you opened to fit the hard drives).

 

Faster, more flexible and cheaper than most dedicated NAS anyway! Gen8 is best if you can find a deal, a very beefy haswell Celeron inside, but they're all foot cubed silent PC's with upgrade options. That flexibility means, if you don't like Freenas (which emulates the fullest featured of NAS boxes pretty well, only with more powerful ZFS tech under the hood) you can always change to nas4free, unraid, amahi, openfiler, openmediavault or anything else - even dust off a copy of windows home server! If you really really really want the full NAS experience you can even whack "xpenology" on there, which is a port of the Synology operating system as used in their NAS boxes.

Speaking from a personal perspective, that sort of nonsense is my day job. I don't really want to be messing about with that sort of thing when I get home so the idea of a set-and-forget box is very appealing.

 

http://www.span.com sell a wide range of Synology boxes and have configurable storage options on there. They'll also build and test the NAS for you. I'd suggest you have a play with that.

I have had both synology and qnap in the past but way prefer my hp micro servers. Yes I now have 2.

I recently bought a new Synology box DS918+ with 4x4TB Ironwolf drives. Added 8gb of additional RAM.

 

Its fantastic. Its running CCTV, Web server, Pi-hole Ubiquiti Controller, Data storage and media streaming. Plex is an option. Docker give you loads of flexibility on what it can do.

 

Cost me around £900

 

Previous Synology box was a DS212j still going strong as a backup for the DS918+

As processing capability isn't important, you'll be able to get a cheap second hand chassis from somewhere and then just stick in drives, install FreeNAS or Xpenology, job done.
