Dreaded Start Menus - Again - apologies

Hi all (long time lurker, infrequent poster)

 

I've been searching and reading but am yet to come up with a solid answer.

 

I am trying to get start menu re-direction in order (eg - computer sub category with computing apps in, science category , IT category etc) but am finding I just get a long list of apps instead.

 

Failing that I'd like to get the XML looking tidier but that also seems convoluted and it seems you have to delete the user profiles each time you update the XML.

 

has anyone been successful without using classic view?

 

apologies if this has all been covered but I've been unable to find a definitive answer that didn't lead back to classic view.

 

Windows 10 is doing my nut in!, If I had any hair left I'd be tearing it out!

If you have it working correctly, they won't have to delete the profile each time. We've found that with both local and mandatory profiles - fix the XML, and the Start layout changes.

 

We do just offer the long list of apps though - some things like Office sit under parent folders but the rest don't. As users are getting used to finding programs with search, this has become much less of an issue.

I'll have another look into the XML tomorrow, we've only had one art room and some offices on Windows 10, so it's been on the back burner. But following some installs this half term I really need to pull my finger out and get a good look at it (the XML that is, not my finger).

OK, I'm getting somwehere. I have the XML working fairly reliably I just need to build on what it contains now , however I have discoved one issue that I'm not sure as yet how to get around. Anything relating to %allusersprofile% microst office applications is working and displays nicely on client machines , however adobe reader and pro x just leave a gap on the start menu? this is also the case with IE , but that is slightly more understandable as it is looking at %appdata% - this is a sample of the xml below. Has anyone encountered similar?

I'm not sure with this one. I don't put the shortcut into the layout - I put the .exe instead, e.g.:

 

 

The GUID point to Program Files (x86). Where I do point to a .lnk I do it to the redirection point e.g.:

 

 

This seems to work nicely, so long as the shortcuts are already in that redirection location.

I had similar issues with the Internet Explorer tile not showing. What i ended up doing during my SCCM task sequence was to create a command line step that copies the shortcut to somewhere the XML can properly reference it. I have a package with all my customisations in including the IE shortcut and the command line is

 

xcopy "Shortcuts\Internet Explorer.lnk" "C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" /Q /Y /I

 

Then the line in my XML file is

 

 

EDIT: Don't know why when i post the above the formatting of the code goes a bit mental but i'm sure you can work out what its meant to say
