Blue_Cookeh Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 Hi Guys, Just looking at our connectivity options and came across a company that seems to provide the various services our school is looking for (whilst out in the sticks!) called https://m247.com/ - has anyone heard of them before, or even used them? Can anyone recommend? Cheers
Steve21 Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 Not heard of them directly, but if you're talking about their fibre connections I'd be wary to their claims, seeing I just tested our school which can apparently get 1Gb in, and yet I know for a fact both BT and Virgin don't have any fibre links to the school without digging up half the street as we've had discussions before about it So get the feeling there might be a huge extra cost if they're not including that! Steve

Steve Yeah it says 1Gb for us too which I know isn't true without £££££ for installation - but they seem to have a Wireless network that might be useful for resilience.
Steve21 Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 Ah guess you're in coverage of that, all ours say no coverage for wireless when you put the postcode in. Steve
Soulfish Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 I've used M247 before to provide a gigabit connection with a secondary backup circuit. This was a few years ago but certainly didn't have any problems with them, and everything worked as expected. They have one of the larger private networks in the UK from what I remember.
Bedders Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 (edited) They used to be called Metronet before they merged. We currently use them for our business as our main ISP. Edit to add: The business I work for has used Metronet as our ISP for several years, since before I started, and the support from them has gone downhill even though the service itself has been ok. My boss knows someone who works as a second line technician for them, and (although this is obviously potentially biased, and third-hand from myself) they say that the sales staff don't actually have a clue and keep passing quotes to the technical teams for prices/work estimates etc. This was evident when I asked our account manager for a quote for installation and maintenance of a wireless radio link between two buildings, and after chasing him for 3 days I finally received the below quote. Nothing else, no plans of how they would do it, or redundancy, or anything actually useful for our decision making process: "I have looked extensively into the solution that you are looking for in regards to the P2P for COMPANY. After getting a technical breakdown I have established that we could provide this connection for £500 per calender month with no install charges on a 36 month contract." This is all seeming to follow from Metronet's merger with M247 last year. Source (apart from us being a customer) https://m247.com/news/metronet-uk-acquires-m247-47-5m-create-national-telecommunications-platform/ Make of that what you will, and your mileage will most likely vary. So in short - support is not fantastic, waiting times can be a while, however the actual quality of the internet line has been satisfactory (no downtime in the last year to speak of). Jonah Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 We used them previously for our leased line for three years, no issues during the time whatsoever.
mdrabble Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 Currently use M247 for 100mb leased line. Was in places before I arrived and had no issues. Contract was up for renewal last year and since I hadn’t had any issues and and I could make cost reduction I renewed contract for a further 3 years. Did have the option to upgrade to 1gb but when I looked on the usage graphs I decided to stick at 100mb and save some money. Support is good - think in the last 4 years I’ve only raised 4 support calls and they were about dashboard access or account questions.
FN-GM Posted February 9, 2018 Posted February 9, 2018 I think they used to be an Edugeek sponsor once upon a time.
SwedishChef Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 avoid avoid avoid. pm me your contact details and I'll explain.
Achandler Posted February 26, 2018 Posted February 26, 2018 I used them for over 8 eyars in previous jobs with no problems whatsoever. The support and installation did get worse though after the merger, an upgraded line took months longer then it should have.
hutch995 Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Hi All any update on this im currently looking at quotes from them
SchoolsBroadband Posted October 10, 2018 Posted October 10, 2018 Hi Guys, Just looking at our connectivity options and came across a company that seems to provide the various services our school is looking for (whilst out in the sticks!) called https://m247.com/ - has anyone heard of them before, or even used them? Can anyone recommend? Cheers FYI we do have a wholesale deal with them and can re-sell their wireless leased lines and still go through our filtering / security. I know things have changed with them a lot since they merged. They also had a load of investment and are looking to grow a lot. Dave
