Monitoring Exchange Traffic In Class

Hello

 

I am an IT teacher and would quite like to know when the little angels are sending emails behind my back rather than working. Unfortunately the layout of the computers in school mean you cannot see more than a few computer screens at a time so no matter how vigilant I am it is easily done.

 

I am not looking to snoop at the content but a live(ish) log of emails being sent would be great so I can just scan for names in my class and deal with them appropriately.

 

Does such a thing exist for exchange?

Seems like it might do it but we don't have exchange here to test.

 

Long answer:

There are lots of data protection and privacy issues here especially if your not the network manger. At minimum I would have thought you'd need the backing of your network manager and SLT before you do this as well as an appropriate AUP.

 

A simpler solution might be to walk around the classroom and look over the student's shoulders!

If you are interested in knowing if they are just using email rather than the actual content then you need some monitoring software such as lanview, AB Tutor, Net Support etc etc. This will allow you to tile the students screen on your teaching pc and will also show little icons next to their name etc of what apps they are running and what the window title is.

With Netsupport you can also block the application from being run.

If they're like the little angels we have then I can safely tell you that it will be happening all the time.

 

Things to look for are monitors turned at a funky angle so as to hide their activity, multiple browser windows in the task bar (if web based email) and the fact that they're breathing .
