goodhead Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 We are using standard restricted users set with xserve. When the kids login they have access to the whole list of computers and servers on the network when they click "GO" and then "NETWORK" Does any one know a way of either removing the "GO" menu or perhaps just the "NETWORK" option?
kingswood Posted April 3, 2008 Posted April 3, 2008 Hi, Couple of ways really: 1. Open Workgroup Manager and authenticate to the local /LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 directory using your usual username and password for the local account 2. Choose the group/users you want to set the preference for, and click on the Preferences button in the toolbar. 3. Choose "Finder" and then in the screen that appears click on the "Commands" view. From here you should select "Always" and uncheck the items you don't want students to access. The "Connect to Server" command is in the list, as is the "Go to iDisk" and "Go to Folder". The second way is more flexible if you want to customise network views for users when they use the Finder, but involves far more steps. You could use a "Managed Network View". I would try the above first and then if that works fine consider a more advanced (though as I said, flexible) option such as Managed Network Views. HTH Paul
Rozzer Posted April 4, 2008 Posted April 4, 2008 I think he means the Network menu item itself. I have been trying to remove that for a while. Like kingswood mentions your best of going down the route of telling them what they can see in a network list with the network option in workgroup manager. Ross

Ross I've just looked under network on the workgroup manager and all there is is the option to turn off bluetooth, wireless and internet sharing. Could you explain the steps i need to find it and what to do? I have 2 groups setup "staff" "students" i also have created a computer group for my mac suite. thanks

I have never really managed to get this quite right. How do you specify what can be seen and what can't. Forgive me for my vague answer. It has been about a year since i last looked at managed networked views. What i did was to configure a default template and as part of that hid the side bar in finder prefs. Yes, they could just go into the finder prefs and re-enable the network in the list but i work at a primary school and so far they ain't found it :-)
Ben-at-work Posted July 12, 2010 Posted July 12, 2010 Hi Guys, Has anyone got any more information on this, like the original poster just want to hide the Network option under the Go menu in Finder. Or remove the Go menu itself. Cheers, Ben
