Apple Pupil Buy Scheme

We are a Primary School with around 450 Pupils, I have been asked to look and see if there was anything around where a Pupil Can purchase an ipad through School, well kind of, Bring the Ipad in to School and use and take home.

The Ipad is locked down and the school push out the apps.

We would like a company to look after the payments for ipads ect

Anyone done this?

I have a few questions!

1. If the Ipad is locked down at the end of the Pupils time at School How will they be managed.

2.If the Pupil Buys the ipad should we be locking them down? as they dont belong to the School.

 

Any help would be great!

A few answers from my experience in a laptop scheme

 

1. At the end of the students time the laptop was wiped and just Windows loaded with drivers.

2. The way my school phrased it was that its like a text book, you buy it for school use so therefore the school will look after it and lock it down with school software.

 

There are probably a lot more schools who could help you about ipads but that is the basics we did.

It's a tricky one.

 

With the management, I'd assume you'd get the iPads from a reseller so they can be added to DEP/Apple School Manager out of the box, then you add your MDM such as lightspeed. Both can be removed remotely and easily, but I find it's always best to get the iPad back, perform a factory reset, clear the asset tags and give it a once over.

 

With regards to the locking down and not belonging to the school, I'd still lock them down, especially if the scheme is through the school and they're intended for lessons, there's still liability to safeguard the children, especially primary school children as they could easily stumble across or download something they shouldn't if they were just clicking away.

When we was looking at this, the iPads aren't the students, they belong to the school and are leased to the student for the duration of their time, and ownership is transferred to the student when they leave.

We have done this!

 

We started with the premise that all of our pupils would have an iPad to use in school regardless of whether their parents joined the scheme or not

 

We were / are partnered with a Authorised Apple Education Reseller (important for DEP etc) and through them we also partnered The Birmingham e Learning Foundation BELF who managed all of the money handling for us:

 

We issued the iPads to pupils in class, parents were offered the chance to join a scheme where they paid a monthly sum and at he end of 2 years the ownership of the iPads were passed to the pupil.

 

All of the iPads were insured for 2 years (worthwhile investment fir us a special school particularly). Part of the insurance is that the iPads were in an approved case.

 

Although we started the scheme before DEP all of our iPads now are purchased within the DEP and then setup within Zuludesk (our current MDM).

 

All of the apps we by are ours and remain yours as we can revoke the licence through the VPP (DEP and VPP are now both managed through Apple School Manager). Pupils on the scheme were able to add their own apps (these had to be appropriate - the school had final say on what's appropriate and there had to be sufficient space for them to actually do their school work).

 

I must say that although we are still one to one, we do not offer this scheme any more largely because some of our more autistic youngster had trouble separating using at home from using at school which caused issues in class.

 

We have about 450 iPads across pupils and staff and it does work pretty well!

You really need to think about the following with all of these things:

What happens when an ipad gets dropped and/or you get another problem with it not covered by the warranty? (and it will happen)

What are you going to do when (not if) an iPad lead/charger fails?

What are you doing about cases?

How are you going to deal with kids forgetting iPads?

How are you going to deal with iPads running out of charge?

Acceptable use policies are also a must to look into - and how to monitor. Social media use, taking photos of staff, sending messages during lessons, playing games etc - all need to be looked at

 

Not all of these are going to be an IT issue, some are classroom management, safeguarding, SEN etc issues.
