[sims] SIMS "Take Register" crashing since last Thursday!

Our staff returned from the Christmas break on Wednesday last week and all was well.

 

On Thursday we started receiving emails saying that staff could not do their registers!

Our local SIMS Support LEA team have taken a copy of our data and loaded it up and are unable to re-create the issue!

 

They are advising - it's an environmental issue!

 

 

We did not make any changes to the SIMS.net server between the Wednesday and Thursday, though the timetabler has said she did make some changes...

 

 

Any ideas what I can try to do to get things working again?

Reading that error from the top down it suggest the clients are having an issue interacting with encrypted documents in the Document Management server.

Can those workstations successfully run attendance reports and standard SIMS.net reports?

Check free disk space on the volumes in the server running the document store. Maybe they've run out?

i would check all students have a legal forename and surname (using egneral student list). Had this happen recently, given it is a required field i don't know how it was deleted from a pupil record.

But would that not cause the same crash to happen on the LEA test setup once they'd loaded our data?

They can't replicate the issue.

Yes, would happen anywhere the students with the missing details are loaded, ie register or marksheet for the group they are in. must not be the issue.

 

I've just looked back at the error i had and it is very different to this one.

I've past the web link to the SIMS Support team to just run it by them first....

 

I've also sent them the copy of the file contained within that folder to see if it breaks it for them....

that folder contains the dictionary so if the school has amended anything related to the dictionary in SIMS, then re-creating it this way will re-set those customisations.

Taken a flyer and it appears to have fixed the issue - awaiting confirmation from the Data Manager...

Well it appears to now be fixed.

 

VERY disappointed that this issue has been outstanding with our LEA Support team since last Thursday, escalated to SIMS/Capita and yet it took me doing a bit of googling to find the answer myself!

The above error appears in, but is not limited to:

 

• Focus | Student | Student Details

• Focus | Attendance / Lesson Monitor

• Focus | Assessment

Workaround

In order to resolve this error follow the steps on the SIMS SQL server below:

 

1. Ensure all instances of SIMS.net are closed and go to the docstorage folder, e.g. C:DOCSTORAGESQLServerSIMS.

 

2. Locate the folder KE and delete this.

 

3. On the affected workstation(s) go to the My SIMS Documents folder, e.g. C:Users[username]DocumentsMy SIMS Documents. The person who is following these steps will need to navigate to the My SIMS Documents folder of the SIMS user who experienced the error.

 

4. Locate the uk-English-v3-whole.dict file and delete this.

 

Log back into SIMS.net, which will recreate the folder and file, and the issue will be resolved. If you find that the error persists when trying to open a document after the folder and file were deleted then this indicates the specific document no longer exists in the SIMS docstorage.

 

You will need to obtain another copy of, or recreate, the affected document and upload this to SIMS so that the document can now be opened/viewed correctly.
