Rob_D Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 Hi Guys, Just found our school has signed up to an Overwatch league. Has anyone done this before or has any idea what will need to be unblocked for this to work through our Smoothwall? This is going to be the biggest problem after making sure the game actually runs on our suite PCs (which the internet says it should). Fun times... Thanks for your help.
Steve21 Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 The biggest issue you'll normally find is actually getting the ports unblocked if you're on any kind of managed firewall We had a look at both Blizz and Steam stuff for a club here and basically without opening hundreds of ports for them found it wasn't going to work well Or are you talking all internal lan games? Rob_D Posted January 8, 2018 Author Posted January 8, 2018 I'm assuming play over the internet unless/until I hear otherwise.
Steve21 Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 You pretty much would need to open all UDP ports at high level then (Main reason why RM basically refused it while we were talking (When I say refused, they would but wanted full HT/Gov sign off etc)) 3478-3479, 5060, 5062, 6250, 12000-64000 that's just for the game, before downloads/voice chat etc if you're considering all that Steve 1
RLR Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 How do you go about licensing and accounts for doing such things? Was thinking about starting a Rocket League club or something at our school using steam but wasn't sure how licensing works for this stuff.
Steve21 Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 When we were looking it basically worked out unless it's a free game that everyone had to use their own accounts. The original school/education edition was cancelled a while ago, and the cybercafe license is only for free stuff really (Else they need to log into their own account anyway). I'm guessing if you wanted to do it yourselves you'd have to setup X number of accounts under your own usernames/emails, else would start having issues with breaking licenses etc Steve
RLR Posted January 8, 2018 Posted January 8, 2018 Fair enough. What Overwatch League did you sign-up to?
Rob_D Posted January 8, 2018 Author Posted January 8, 2018 Looking at the email chains, ours is being done by Welcome to Digital Schoolhouse | Digital Schoolhouse I assume they're dealing with all the licensing type issues their end. Hoping to get some more technical information soonish. The ICT teachers are the ones arranging it all and we're still waiting for install media and licensing details to arrive. And TBH I'm not sure anyone here knows exactly how it's going to work yet.
Rob_D Posted January 10, 2018 Author Posted January 10, 2018 For anyone who's interested Blizzard support sent us this link of ports to unblock (it's not as bad as I thought) https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/7842
RLR Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 I emailed digital school house but haven't heard anything back.
Rob_D Posted January 10, 2018 Author Posted January 10, 2018 The game media arrived today (just reached my desk). Far as I can tell, they just sent us 6 retail copies. Looks like we're going to have to set up 6 battle.net accounts and the stick the game keys in them. Maybe...
RLR Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 If anyone else is interested in signing you can use this link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/6CBPBR7 This year has already started so they'll be in touch around easter time for next years. They said they can provide a free copy of games to play them and in some cases provide the hardware. 1
Rob_D Posted February 20, 2018 Author Posted February 20, 2018 Sorry to revive this thread, but we've got another interesting/odd turn of events. Everything seemed to be going fine until this morning when all 6 of our overwatch PCs were trying to download game updates. They pretty much managed to saturate our Gb internet link, which caused mayhem with emails and other online services. (Not a massive issue, we just stopped updating and told the teacher to do it out of hours) What's really odd is, if they were hammering our connection so hard (Smoothwall reported 770-850Mb/s download throughput rates - Vs 2-6Mb/s under normal operations), why was it taking over 2 hours to download a 3Gb update? The update clients were reporting download rates in the high Kb/s. 1
Steve21 Posted February 20, 2018 Posted February 20, 2018 There's an option in the client to throttle installs so might be worth enabling that. Can limit current and future patches rate so it'll download them slowly over time rather than when they're needed etc. Also I don't know if it's changed in the last few years but unless you did all the firewall ports for the client it reverts to p2p for downloads so might have been uploads rather than downloads? The update clients were reporting download rates in the high Kb/s. Almost sounds like the blizzard app clients might have limited downloads, check under settings to see if they have a bandwidth cap (haven't used the launcher for several years so I might be wrong in this, but I think it imposes a limit by default).
