[ms office - 2016] Excel auto check column for duplicates

I am having to import usernames into a new bit of learning software one of the primary schools bought. The format for the usernames is first name followed by the first initial of the surname. Everything is fine accept when i create the csv some kids have duplicate names and when i import it, it just gives the duplicates random usernames. Is there a way in excel to highlight duplicates in a column?

Yes.

 

Select the column and use Conditional Formatting from the ribbon. It will highlight duplicates.

There's a built in feature on the home tab:

 

Select the range of cells you wish to test. ...

On Excel's Home tab, choose Conditional Formatting, Highlight Cells Rules, and then Duplicate Values.

Click OK within the Duplicate Values dialog box to identify the duplicate values.

Duplicate values in the list will now be identified.

 

You can choose how you want them highlighted (colours etc) and then apply other rules, eg filter.
