FMS - upgrade -

Brace yourself, this is going to get complicated....

 

Ok...our bursar got hold of FPS.net by HCSSeducation. This will interface between FPS and FMS 6.100.

 

Now things get complex ...

 

We are running FMS 6.83 , on a seperate server to SIMS. From speaking with someone today at Capita, I was told that essentially what we need to do is upgrade to FMS 6.85 , then upgrade to FMS 6.91 , at which point we could then upgrade to 6.100 in a few weeks.. and along the way we can do our FMS Migration which is required before august.

 

Now..as I say, our FMS is seperate to our SIMS, so we dont have solus on the FMS server, so cant get the upgrades that way. If we try to setup solus on the FMS server it complains that it isnt a sims workstation or sql server.

 

So, my query essentially, is whats the easiest way for us to get FMS6.83 , FMS6.91 and FMS6.100

 

Or am I just being thick?

Sounds like you will need to get the FMS Setup CD(s) from capita.

could you not just put the sims workstation install on the fms server?

 

...I didn't think they did upgrades from .83 to .91 anyway but through solus, which is why you needed to use an old cd to install a new workstation

Anyone know if sticking sims workstation installation on our FMS server will work out ok?

 

I dont really have time to be farting about recovering FMS if it cocks up by putting sims workstation on there, so would preferably like to know in advance that it'll work out ok

well, our sims and fms are on the same server, and we have sims workstation on their too. so i don't see it being an issue.

 

Its a seperate app, using a seperate database....

If you just stick workstation on and run SOLUS it will complain that there is no valid SQLApplicationDirectory

 

"SIMS SQL Apps Directory does not exist: D:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$SIMS\Binn"

 

I guess you could try pointing that the UNC of the Binn folder or some other (Valid folder) on the local server by changing SIMS.ini,

 

I wouldn't fancy it though,

I think you will probably need these upgrades released on solus. I'm not aware of there being cd versions for those.

 

6.91 will also need a license from capita. The 6.85 -> 6.91 process is quite involved and needs various data to be recorded by someone who knows whats in fms really.

That could be a bit of a bugger for us as we dont have solus on the FMS server. Maybe I might have to go ahead and try shoving sims workstation on it and hoping I can get it to work

You can get an image of 6.85 from Capita support - they are on their FTP server - I had to get them last week for our upgrade (though it did take them 2 days to realise that they were available) - while I was on - I did notice a 6.100 image there too - not a 6.91 though.

We have sims and fms on one server, and also a separate standalone install of FMS.

Whenever i need to update the standalone, i have to manually copy the files over from the main server to the local standalone machine and then run them.

There's only a couple of files. Even if you don't have another FMS setup, surely these upgrades are the same everywhere, so someone could just send them to you.

I'll double check what the files are tomorrow at work.

Thanks, i've contacted Capita regarding it today, and also about the FMS migration. Given our seperated FMS and SIMS situation , I am apprehensive about the FMS migration , so figured I would just double check in advance any issues

We have separate SIMS and FMS servers as you describe. We have SIMS workstation installed on the FMS server without any problems. When I run SOLUS with our setup, I can do it from anywhere (workstations included) and the update installers and patches always go to our SIMS\setups\ directory on the SIMS server. That includes FMS updates.

 

I can't guarantee this was the case before we migrated to FMS 6.91. Prior to that point I think we used to run SOLUS on the FMS server itself and never had any problems beyond those introduced in every new SIMS release

I'm still awaiting a fix for the Solus upgrade to FMS without SIMS issue. We've just had Capita in to do the 6.91 upgrade - by god I'm glad I didn't try and do it myself - in the end he had to copy everything off the server onto a laptop, do the upgrade and then copy it all back - he came with a fist full of CDs that I wouldn't've had access to - what a shoddy system it is...
