I remember watching him on the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures back in the seventies - one of the few that made science really interesting (and loved the egg races ;) ).

Sad a Great influence in my past - made Science exciting

A true eccentric, but he was another like Johnny Morris and (fortunately still with us) John Craven who had the knack of talking to kids without talking down to them, and still making what they had to say relevant and interesting. Egg Race was one of my 'must watch' programmes in the days of only three TV channels.
