sippo Posted December 15, 2017 Posted December 15, 2017 We are experiencing a few issues with Location Blocking within Smoothwall. It worked last week absoulutely fine. I have been in touch with smoothwall, and they say I can only use IP's for blocking. I have tried the name and that's correct, the location blocking doesn't work. We add the IP and it works. We don't really want to reserve IPs purely on a management side of things. Anyone have any suggestions?
sippo Posted December 19, 2017 Author Posted December 19, 2017 Does no-one else do location blocking? Smoothwall don't seem to be very helpful. They say if it doesn't work by name, you have to use IPs. In their documentation it says you can use name...
Achandler Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 I don't work at a school anymore, but locations can be setup using a full DNS name and it works. We use to use the full DNS name for blocking classrooms at once, it's annoying creating a location first time but never had real issues.
mdrabble Posted December 19, 2017 Posted December 19, 2017 I allow by locations which is similar..... Do you have reverse DNS configured? I had reverse DNS configured on my Windows DNS but had issues to start with as I didn't have reverse DNS setup correctly on smoothwall. Under Network ->DNS -> Conditional DNS forwarders Under the domains, I didn't add the reverse DNS settings correctly. I tried adding as 10.16.in-addr.arpa instead of 16.10.in-addr.arpa I then put the machine/netbios names in locations and configured location blocking accordingly.
