For the last couple of days our exchange servers have been unable to deliver external mail, looking at the error on the send connector its saying DNS failure, unable to resolve mail.bgfl.org domain non-existent.

Is anyone else having a similar issue?

So far the service desk have been unable to find a problem and are unaware of any other schools having an issue.

NSLOOKUP doesn't resolve the address, it comes back with the same error non-existent domain.

I have just had a call from them to say to change try changing it to smtp.bgfl.org and this does appear to have worked and the emails have been released from the queue.

They said this is the mail server address and they have never heard of mail.bgfl.org before, despite us having used it for the last 10 or so years!

I have asked for them to investigate when it was changed and why we were not informed of the change.

Thanks for everyone's help :)

Wasn't mail.bgfl.org used back when Zimbra used to be hosted? smtp.bgfl.org definitely resolves.

It could well have been, we have had an internally hosted exchange server now for the last 10 years or so and never had Zimbra, we went from the old days of BGFL Webmail straight to Exchange.

It just seems very odd it was working up until Tuesday of this week with mail.bgfl.org as the smarthost send connector then suddenly stopped.

It could very well be something that's finally been switched off or some sort of configuration change. Given that most schools in Birmingham are using O365, this wouldn't have affected their mail traffic.
