What is going on with HP/Aruba pricing?!

@Wave9_Lee that is the price for a 48 port Poe+ sfp+ unifi switch. Total cost of ownership is important to me. That one off price I think represents good value for money compared to a one off purchase plus licence model. Hi Mark, subject to deal details, exchange rate (blah blah) it would be about 2.5 x that price with a 10 year licence/warranty/upgrades. Apart from feature set, the advantages (for me) is that you don't need to buy spares as you have NBD advance replacement. You get proper support 24/7. Urgent patches are tested and released quickly (bug fixes, security patches). Single Pane of Glass management from any web device across an entire estate(s) and product type. Visibility is key for troubleshooting inc cable testing, packet captures, virtual stacking, topology mapping etc. I'm sure Unifi 'does thejob', but if the budget stretches then I believe Meraki still offers comparable value over the term. If, in 9 years and 10 months the switch goes down, you get a brand new replacement of whatever the current equivalent model is at that time - (probably solar powered hover-switch!)

 

I'm not a Cisco fanboy (quite the opposite) but I genuinely think that when combined with the warranty, support, troubleshooting and ease of use, Meraki can save money over most other platforms. We can spread the cost of the platform over a number of years to suit budget if needed.

 

Anyway, my twopenneth : )

In 9 years and 10 months if the meraki switch goes down I have no doubt you'll get a new switch... With another 10 years licence? Very much doubt that.

 

If you have used unifi recently you'll know that they do more than just "does the job". You mention the single pane of glass... Errrr unifi does this as well for free

Why would we need to do layer 7 stuff internally? Personally don't think it's needed on a school network with a 10g backbone and 1g to clients. We do layer 7 at our smoothwall

Lots of reasons to do it various different ways - wasn't suggesting one way better than another was just asking after the features and if anyone knew. I take it that it doesn't? J

The unifi switches are all layer 2 from what I know. The edgeswitches I think do layer 3. They have a unified security gateway that does layer 7 but wouldn't want that doing my core stuff like inter vlan routing as don't think it's chunky enough.

Good point, well made. Tbf unifi in the grand scheme of things isn't cheap. It just feels like better value for money
