Any Future For Our iPads?

Afternoon everyone - this might be painful so please bear with me.

 

I inherited this network along with a few iPads. I absolutely loath the things, but we have them so might as well make some use if possible. To summarise my VERY VERY hazy memories, during handover we'd lost the Mac server here (and we have, it's b0rked) but the iPads, although centrally managed *somehow* can be un-managed using configurator (whatever that is) on this Macbook that we have. It might then be possible to manage them as standalone devices with their own profiles, which I guess will be their own identities within some framework or another that means you can install apps on them one device at a time.

 

Is any of that making sense to anyone?

 

As it stands they're iPad 2s; are they better off in the bin?

What's wrong with your Mac server? It'll be worth working on that - even if it needs a full reinstall. Unless it has been abused they're pretty reliable machines. With that, you can manage them using Profile Manager which can make life much easier for you.

 

You'll be able to use Apple Configurator on them, but you'll be missing many newer features as they run an older version of iOS that lacks them. Not a deal breaker.

So, I plug the iPads into the Macbook for the sake of Apple Configurator, remove something in terms of a profile from them, and then follow on as per instructions from Apple here: https://help.apple.com/configurator/mac/2.5/#/cadf1802aed

Pretty much - if they were supervised with another Mac it can be a pain but if they're unsupervised it should be alright. That obviously gives you setup and profile, but you won't have any sort of MDM for pushing out apps etc. Up to you if you need that, and it's less important on older devices as some apps won't work any more.

its worth noting that alot of app store apps require IOS 10 which i dont think ipad2 supports

so things like office etc which have worked previously for us no longer push from the app store iva meraki
