UE-V setup

A question for all of you with UE-V setup. Did you setup a central Settings Storage Location on a server share or did you leave it so the location defaults to the user's homedrive? Just wondering if either of these options have their own little issues in the real world.

 

I was tempted to leave them in the users homedrive however I'd imagine that if a user's disk quota is full, this would cause an issue?

 

Also, how large does the UE-V settings location get for each user in the real world? Microsoft's advice is to allow 20MB of space for each user? Does that sound accurate?

We use a central settings storage location on our file server, each users SettingsPackage folder is somewhere between 15-25MB.

 

We do use a few custom templates which probably adds to the size each user needs.

We use a central store where they pick up the initial templates from but their own settings are stored in their user area. It seems to take up between a couple of hundred K and 30-40MB each so not a huge drain.

We use the users home drive (Well, folder redirected drive now). We have a central locations for templates but as yet not needed any 3rd party ones.

Am I correct in thinking that UE-V is part of MDOP? I've logged into our Licencing portal and the latest version of MDOP there is the 2015 version. I take it that this isn't the current version of the software. Is that correct? I've asked our licencing re-seller to try and get it added into our portal. Our OVS agreement hasn't changed since then as far as I'm aware.

The UE-V client is built into Windows 10 now (v1607 onwards) and the latest UE-V Template Generator is included with the Windows 10 ADK.

 

No need for any of the MDOP ISOs.

I believe it is but Windows 10 has the client built in so you don't need to use the client from this if your using Windows 10. You only need the template creator if required from the above ISO.

I'm struggling with this UE-V deployment and I was wondering if someone could point out something obvious that I'm missing here. It doesn't seem save any settings. This is my current setup:

 

Win 10 1709 deployment (testing on two workstations).

Computer GPO with the following policies enabled:

 

Comp\Adm Temp\Windows Components\Microsoft User Experience Virtualization\Enable UEV - Enabled

Comp\Adm Temp\Windows Components\Microsoft User Experience Virtualization\Use User Experience Virtualization - Enabled

Comp\Adm Temp\Windows Components\Microsoft User Experience Virtualization\Configure Sync Method - Enabled and set to Sync Provider

Comp\Adm Temp\Network /Offline Files\Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files feature - Enabled

 

User GPO configured as follows:

 

User\Adm Temp\Windows Components\Microsoft User Experience Virtualization\Use User Experience Virtualization - Enabled

User\Adm Temp\Windows Components\Microsoft User Experience Virtualization\Configure Sync Method - Enabled and set to Sync Provider

 

The user GPO is applied to a security group that my test user is a member of. I can see that the UE-V Agent is running when the user is logged in. No "SettingsPackages" folder is created in the users homedrive. I've tried specifying a Settings Storage location on a share with the permissions set out as described in the following MS technet article but again no SettingsPackages folders are created and nothing syncs:

I got stuck at this stage as well. You need to import the UE-V templates. Have a look here:

I do this as a MDT task importing all the ones I need, but for testing you can do it on your machine then try again.

You appear to have missed the Settings template catalog path GPO.

This policy setting configures where custom Settings location templates are stored and if the catalog will be used to replace the default Microsoft templates installed with the UE-V Agent.

 

If you enable this policy setting, the UE-V Agent checks the specified location once each day and updates its synchronization behavior based on the templates in this location. Settings location templates added or updated since the last check are registered by the UE-V Agent. The UE-V Agent deregisters templates that were removed from this location.

 

If you specify a UNC path and leave the option to replace the default Microsoft templates unchecked, the UE-V Agent will use the default Microsoft templates installed by the UE-V Agent and custom templates in the Settings template catalog. If there are custom templates in the Settings template catalog which use the same ID as the default Microsoft templates, they will be ignored.
