Still testing this Bluetooth suggestion, it seems to have made a bit of a difference, going to test it properly next lesson.

 

I'm getting sub 20ms pings against previous 300-3000 ms pings.

 

Double checking I have not overlooked anything at the moment.

 

 

Edit - It does seem to have made an improvement, but as soon as the laptops start doing anything, it still falls over. I will test more thoroughly this evening.

As it's running take note of how many packets/second you're getting (bottom of the window). If the number is high there's something further to look in to.

Just to check, when you go into the network adapters driver properties, in the advanced tab is U-APSD or something similar disabled?

 

I know this is disabled by default in windows 10 on those cards (we have them and have them working with Unifi) but it may be enabled on windows 7 and I know that can cause issues

That is disabled by default on the later drivers.

We have a fully managed wireless system, but it's by D-Link. Occasionally we get the same issue where even though nothing has changed, the laptops will run fine, get 30 students logged on no problem, then once in a blue moon we get 15 connected, some don't get network access and ping's to the laptops are in the thousands.

Typically, I don't do much, just reboot the nearest AP, which forces them to another AP, then when the closest one comes back on they start connecting properly.

Just how it is, but 99% of the time class fulls have no issues.

Not switched to 5ghz. 2.4 is adequate, 5ghz doesn't have the range and power of 2.4hz and shouldn't be an issue if you don't have other devices causes interference.

OK - so its well worth changing network card ... a couple of pounds each would get you dual band "n" off ebay....and that may be your best buy - and not worry about why existing cards are useless...(Wondering how such poor cards ended up in what are otherwise a reasonable laptop).

 

...But you might decide that paying £10 each would get you "ac" cards...maybe now is a good time to get a new "ac" access point as well in that area (except...be aware that "ac" - especially wave 1 - may not give you anything better than "n" unless you have such a sparse sprinkling of AP s to be able to use wide channel widths)

Any particular bands you would recommend? - We are using the 'Half Mini' form factor.

@VeryPC_Colin_M did myself a very good price on intel AC cards that support 5ghz as well as 2.4 a few years ago when I had problems with ralink cards that caused issues in HP probook 4340s's. He may be able to help you out with some new one to replace what you have. If you have the latest intel drivers on the machines already you may just be able to get away with swapping the cards

I think the problem is not in your AP. Have you set a password for your wireless network? Maybe too many other devices like phones have connected to your network and slowed the speed down.

Are you using the APs connected to non POE+ switches? Just standard POE? We saw this when the AP was trying to full more than 15W from the switch, when we upgraded switches to PoE+ it was fine.
