[WSUS] Win10 1709 clients slow to connect initially

Hi everyone,

 

I'm busy deploying a small scale batch of Windows 10 1709 PC's. Deployment is smooth, but the interesting thing is how long it is taking the client to contact WSUS and download updates. I noticed that things got slower with 1607, but 1709 is even slower.

 

I've already set Delivery Optimisation to Bypass, all the other WSUS settings are correct and work for all clients. It just seems like the clients seem to want to connect to MS Update first and only after a ton of failures do they start talking to WSUS. Ive' made sure that none of the policies should trigger the Dual Scan mode and I've also updated to the latest 1709 ADMX templates.

 

I can't help but feel that Microsoft have messed badly with WSUS functionality in Windows 10 in comparison to Windows 7 and 8.1. Hell, even the first 2 Windows 10 versions worked decently enough with WSUS. It seems like they really want us to connect to MS update rather than on premesis servers, but we simply do not have the bandwidth to be able to do that. WSUS saves us so much bandwidth it's not even funny.
