Exchange 2010 Minimal Hybrid - How does mail flow? Mimecast>Exch>O365?

I want to configure our Exchange 2010 server with Office 365.

 

My users are configured in Office 365 already with AD Azure Connect Sync and they can log in to use OneDrive and Office Online.

 

I want to migrate their mailboxes into Office 365 so they can access they mail together with the use of the other Office 365 tools.

 

We use Mimecast for spam filtering and archiving and will continue to do so for now. This initial setup needs to be as simple as possible.

 

Question

If I configure Exchange Minimal Hybrid, am I correct in saying that emails flow all the same. From Mimecast to Exchange and then it syncs with Office 365? So in theory no mail flow changes are required? We can keep our Exchange On-Premise for now and Mimecast?

We do exactly this, here's an example:

Hotmail looks up MX record which is to MimeCast which forwards to EX10 OnPrem which forwards to 365.

 

You'll need to add the office 365 to your spf records for users who send out from 365.

1. Did you use the Minimal Hybrid setting on the wizard?

2. How long have you had Exchange running still since you did the migration, and why haven't you decommissioned yet?

3. Did you have you change any mail flow settings on Exchange/Mimecast/DNS when you completed the wizard? (Apart from the SPF record).

1. We're a fairly large enterpise so went with full and needed the features while we migrated.

2. Its been running for nearly a year, will take us ages to migrate. Have several thousand users across the globe to coordinate.

3. Depends if your journal with Mimecast and/or if you scan outgoing mail with mimecast, if so then you'll need to route your mail out via Mimecast via a send send connectors on 365. As for on prem then I think the hybrid process adds a send connector for 365 traffic.
