Strange issue here we have a room of 31 computers on windows 10 which for the most part work down however we’ve had multiple reports over a few weeks from teachers of freezing.

The most common scenario seems to be the whole class are asked to open a file from the student shared area in the case I witnessed Word documents they only have read access to. About 6 opened fine but the rest either had word stop responding, word saying ‘opening file’ and some just having file explorers bar show the loading blue bar repeatedly for about 5 minutes.

I’ve tried to replicate the issue logging every PC in the room and highlighting the same document they had issues with. Myself and two other staff quickly opened the file on every computer and only 3 failed to open it but the 2nd time a few seconds later worked fine.

We’ve only had this since moving to 10 and and only reports of this room so far. They’re all wired to a HP switch same Vlan however the switch does have only a 1GB connection to the core.

No other users seemed to have issues at the same time elsewhere and I was able to access the same resources instant while theirs were still freezing 🤔

So many possible causes. Disk io / file io / network io / server resources / file system settings / anti-virus. You will either have to analyse performance metrics or try a process of elimination.

UPDATE: I think it is office file validation but we've kept it on as it stops kids and staff dragging folders into each other by accident as it gives a warning "do you trust this file" blah blah.

To disable you add your UNC share path to the Trusted Internet Zone or Intranet Zone.

Original Post:

We've had a similar issue which we never got to the bottom of.

Windows Server 2012 R2

Windows 7 Clients

Office 2010

Thought it was an issue with a single word document being opened by 30 users and then each copy of word trying to make a .tmp file so when i changed the file to read only the issue disappeared.

But had the same issue with a .URL weblink file today. Think it may be due to one slow client holding it open and causing a backlog or else the Sophos AV is choking at the number of connections.

Always causes the explorer.exe process to stop responding on the client (why networking issues cause explorer.exe to do this is beyond me)

As I say have yet to get to the bottom of it. Have had no other issues with slowness on file share browsing. Will try making the .URL file read only but I don't think it would need to write to the file just to open a URL?!?

Seen something similar with Office 2010 and Office File Validation was the culprit. Switching that off with a registry fix solved the problem.

You hit the nail on the head there! See my post above.
