Using IE and getting BBC to play sound on default playback device

I've been getting reports that users are unable to hear sound when using the BBC iplayer but on further testing the problem is also on the BBC news videos too. The default sound playback device is set to use the speakers or monitor i.e. whatever is plugged to the rear green jack but the strange thing is other sites like Youtube or vimeo the sound plays correctly so with the sites I've checked it is only the BBC site that's affected. I can open 2 tabs in IE, 1 for BBC and 1 for Youtube and the YouTube tab will play through the speakers and the BBC tab will play through the PC's internal speakers. I've disabled the internal speakers in the BIOS so now the BBC tab still plays but I don't hear anything.

 

We have a mixture of computers here and both HP 8200 and HP 4000 are affected but strangely the HP 7900 work fine. I'm sure the problem is with IE as when using Edge all sites play sounds just fine. At first I thought it was a profile issue but users with standard profiles are affected too.

dont suppose they have via soundcard do they i had issues with those whereby there was no sound until i loaded soundeck(or whatever the settings app is called) and told it that the speakers and headphones werent entirely separate devices (and diddnt need their own entry in playback devices) even then some front ports diddnt work and i had to turn off auto detection but i suspect they have broken off jacks in them

Cant help with a fix but we had the issue with this website too.

 

All other sites would play sound ok but this website would only play on the laptop speakers.

 

We tried a lot and the teacher eventually found the videos he needed from the site on Youtube.

 

His laptop was a Dell!

No sound card and the problem is only with IE
