nicholab Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 I want to replace a pfsense/unifi box that is running on a pc with some standard kit. I am looking at either MikroTik RouterBOARD RB2011iL-RM or an unifi edge router as the gateway. I am then going to get a cloud key to run the wifi controller. I might get a raspberry pi to run a radius server on unless I can do that in the router. Does anyone have other suggestions to use as or comments on the routers?
MatthewL Posted September 16, 2017 Posted September 16, 2017 From what I have seen the Unifi router's don't look much yet, I might be wrong but I'd stick with pfSense.
XiJ Posted September 16, 2017 Posted September 16, 2017 We use mikrotik routers. Fantastic kit - so many options. I've put one in at home too.

XiJ Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 How hard did you find it to setup? Have you setup the vpn? Can it do radius? At home I set up without any issues. I added a L2TP-IPSec VPN server without any troubles to both home and our schools running Mikrotiks Some of the school config is more advanced and above me! We use GRE tunnels, bridges and access lists for things. What I would say if there is a wealth of info, help and tutorials out there to help you. Not sure about Radius. I believe so as the boss was setting something up last week but unsure if it was on Mikrotik / routerOS
cpjitservices Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 the words replace and pfsense never need to be said in the same sentence, just whack PFSense on some proper enterprise hardware and Alberts your Uncle.!!
nicholab Posted September 18, 2017 Author Posted September 18, 2017 Pfsense is great but i am looking for a low power cost effective box that will take power outages as well as the HP switch or possibly replace it. I will also be using the unifi cloud key to replace the wireless controller that is installed on PFsense.

JackCPickup Posted September 18, 2017 Posted September 18, 2017 Go with a Ubiquiti ERL and forget about it.
