sjpf Posted September 4, 2017 Posted September 4, 2017 (edited) We have a problem with any machine running Lanschool student. If you launch Edge and try browsing, it then closes with a message saying "Lanschool 0.0.0.0 has closed this application due to private browsing" (something like that anyway). Edge isn't being blocked by any of the teacher machines so it's really weird and occurs on machines on different channels. Anyone else with similar issues or ideas on how to fix it? ADMaster Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 I've not seen that issue, I'll specifically try edge when I'm in tomorrow. What version of lanschool are you running. Do you have any website blocking setup in lanschool?
LanSchoolUK_Adam Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Hi sjpf, Until it is officially supported as a controllable/limitable browser, Edge in considered the same as InPrivate/Incognito Mode and is blocked by LanSchool to force Students to use a supported browser (IE/Chrome/Firefox/Safari). You can disable this easily enough; go to Web Limiting (not App Limiting) and there's a checkbox at the bottom saying to block Private browsers. This remains in effect even if you don't have Limit Web switched on. It's ticked by default, and if you disable it, Edge will work. If you allow Edge, then most of LanSchool's web control features will not carry over to it, such as website activity reporting, URL capture, URL blocking and Co-Browse. I will see if I can get an update from development as to when Edge support will be added. In the meantime, Chrome is definitely the better option if it's available to you. As you mentioned you're running two different versions of LanSchool, you can do a site-wide update by updating your LCS (LanSchool Connection Server) to the latest version (.79) and then putting the Tech/Teacher/Student MSI's into it's root (C:\Program Files\LanSchool). This will force each client to perform a version check when it connects for the first time that day, and will download/update over the top if it's running a lower version than the server itself. This means you just have to keep your server up to date and the rest of the deployment will fall in line
sjpf Posted September 5, 2017 Author Posted September 5, 2017 Thanks for your response. This option is unticked on the teacher's machine and the problem exists on all students on all channels so we don't know where the box is ticked! We will investigate
LanSchoolUK_Adam Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 Do you have any Teacher Consoles running on Channel 0 (admin channel) - as this will affect all machines regardless of where they are? It might be worth raising a remote support request at [email protected] so one of our guys can take a look.
sjpf Posted September 5, 2017 Author Posted September 5, 2017 We only have 4 teacher machines on at the moment, channels 15, 4, 23 and 31
LanSchoolUK_Adam Posted September 5, 2017 Posted September 5, 2017 I think it's best we take a look - dropped you a PM
sjpf Posted September 7, 2017 Author Posted September 7, 2017 Support said there was an option when installing for allowing Edge. Tried this and the silent command but it still blocks it
SWC Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Hi there We are having the same issue with Edge and we are running 8.0.0.42. IE and Chrome work fine but Edge browser just shuts down
sjpf Posted October 17, 2018 Author Posted October 17, 2018 The problem was due to someone in the tech team having the Mac version of the Lanschool tech console. As soon as they stopped running their version of the tech console the problem was 'fixed'
LanSchoolUK_Adam Posted October 17, 2018 Posted October 17, 2018 Hi there We are having the same issue with Edge and we are running 8.0.0.42. IE and Chrome work fine but Edge browser just shuts down Hi SWC, Edge can be disabled in one of two ways in LanSchool; either a setting within the Student client, or via an enforcement from the Tech/Teacher Consoles. Please can you try updating to v8.0.1 (latest build) for your Tech Consoles, Teacher Consoles and Student clients, with the following consideration; There's an option called 'Allow Modern Internet Explorer' which can be found in the Advanced Settings of the MSI install; You can also use the switch ALLOW_METRO_IE if you're deploying via script. The option appears in the ADMX template for GPO deployment too. https://helpdesk.lenovosoftware.com/portal/kb/articles/scripting-or-mass-deploy-switches-for-lanschool-install-22-8-2017 Also make sure that Edge isn't listed in the 'Limit Apps' section of the controlling console for that room / channel / class list. As I mentioned above, we don't have full functionality on Edge yet so we recommend using one of our supported desktop browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome and Safari). If you're still having the same problem after all of the above, feel free to PM me and I'll put you in touch with someone who can take a look remotely.
