SIMS Hyper-v crashed urgent

Help!!

A local school technician has gone away for 5 days, the sims hyper-v has crashed and is showing that it needs to attempt system restore

The technician has made a different user the admin account for the machines (lets say adminx)

 

We know adminx password, but the windows restore option is only allowing us to use the local administrator account and no one has that password, not even the technician.

How do I get the hyper V server to accept the f12 combination - I've already set the boot up delay.

 

is there a way to specify to a hyper-v server to boot up in safe mode?

This hack should let you get into the local admin account if you can boot into safe mode?

 

If you forget your Windows admin password, try this | PCWorld

Thanks for those links - nearly my problem.

 

I can run up the physical machine, no problems but the virtual machine wants recovery but only offering local administrator ..

 

Even though I've set boot up delay, I can't get to it quick enough to press F8 in the window.

Since its vitualized surely you have backups from somewhere? Are you using Veeam?

 

I would just restore to a new Hyper-V server. It shouldn't take long.

 

I doubt the system restore option is any quicker than building a new server.

Backups .. thereby hangs another tail.. I've built new virtual server. Sims going on as we speak, but need all contents of docstorage etc. On " broken" hyper v I can browse these folders in command prompt of recovery option with server DVD ISO in place, but how do I copy these files out??? If I. An get them to physical then I can get them to new virtual

Easiest and probably least painful option if you are looking for a file only recovery is to take a copy of the old SIMS server VHD or VHDX file ( you can find the file location in the settings of a VM in hyper-V manager ), you can then double click the copy (it will just mount and show as another drive in windows) and browse the relevant data partition and get a copy of the DB, Doc storage e.c.t

Hi John - many thanks for the info, I'm trying that but when I open it or mount it, it only mounts showing system reserved g: drive with temp folder with text files . One of these files shows disk layout in virtual drive.. yaaayyy .. just found the other one. Now how do I thank you a hundred times!!

Thank you so much for this reply last week, this was a real life saver for the school as I was able to grab the docstorgae and all the infor from the FMS backup regimes which were also needed.
